Flash Comics #86 Mile High pedigree (DC, 1947) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages. The first appearance of the Black Canary makes this an issue that stands out from the rest in this later part of the title's run. She debuts in the Johnny Thunder feature, and when we first see her she's persuading a lovestruck Johnny to steal for her! But even here it's left in doubt whether she's a villainess or a heroine, as the people she steals from are shown to be crooks themselves. The story's by the character's co-creators, writer Robert Kanigher and artist Carmine Infantino. The issue also boasts a Hawkman story with Joe Kubert art and cover art by Lee Elias. This is the only copy graded above 8.0 by CGC as of this writing. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $3,700. CGC census 7/05: 1 in 9.6, none higher.

Flash Comics #92 (DC, 1948) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages. Overstreet notes that this key issue is "rare in Mint due to black ink smearing on white cover." Well, there's no sign of any smearing on this outstanding copy. This issue is Black Canary's first cover appearance as well as her first solo story (i.e. her first story without Johnny Thunder). Plus, it's got the first appearance of detective Larry Lance, who became a recurring character in Black Canary's adventures. It is also the first time we readers saw the black canary-shaped locket she wore around her neck, which had handy devices hidden inside. Carmine Infantino (in the phase when his art was heavily influenced by Milton Caniff) drew the character on the cover and inside the issue. This star-studded affair also features Flash (drawn by Lee Elias), Hawkman (drawn by Joe Kubert), and the Atom. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $5,000. CGC census 7/05: 2 in 9.4, none higher.

Lee Elias - Chamber of Chills #10 Cover Original Art (Harvey, 1952). A truly twisted piece from one of Harvey's greatest artists, this killer cover has all the creepy hallmarks of a true Elias gem! These two goofs obviously haven't read enough horror comics, or they'd know that weird-looking caves are often the head and mouth of some oversized monster. From bizarre imagery to the innovative use of zipatone -- it's all here! The cover has a 10" x 15" image area. Some of the type stats have been replaced; otherwise this piece is in Excellent condition. Lee Elias signed the drawing at the lower left of the design.

Lee Elias - Witches Tales #8 Cover Original Art Cover (Harvey, 1952). This pretty li'l gal is too young to die -- or is she? The Grim Reaper and his motley work crew of skeletal helpers drag the bound beauty, kicking and screaming, to an open grave -- it's a prime-time pre-code Harvey horror cover as only the great Lee Elias could detail it! The cover image is 11" x 16.75". The title logo and blurbs at the top of the image are a carefully color-matched replacement; otherwise the art is in Excellent condition. Don't delay on bidding on this chilling premature burial cover, spotlighting a date with Death!

Berni Wrightson - Original Art for House of Mystery #186, pages 2 & 3 (DC, 1970). Graham Ingels, Lee Elias, Clive Barker, Jack Davis... all artists who have left their mark in the field of horror illustration. But one name stands out above them all, as the foremost master of terror, one name that evokes images of rotting zombies and fetid crypts, of muck-encrusted man-mockeries and foul creatures of the night. That name, of course, is Berni Wrightson. Wrightson first appeared on the comic scene in the early 1970s and quickly made a name for himself. His fame was secured with his work on the original Swamp Thing, a short, but well-remembered run many consider a classic. The page offered here is an early effort from House of Mystery showing a simple housecat transforming into a beautiful Egyptian priestess as Cain, our host, looks on in amazement. A powerful piece, and likely Berni's first (and maybe only) double-page splash for DC. Wrightson's genius is apparent even this early in his career (nearly a year before the introduction of Swamp Thing in House of Secrets #92). Measuring approximately 22.5" x 15.5", this double-page spread is in excellent condition and is signed by the artist in the upper left.
