Description

Lee Elias Tomb of Terror #11 Cover Original Art (Harvey, 1953). Nothing says pre-Code horror like a severed head - 11 of the ghastly delights, in this case. All courtesy of that versatile workhorse Elias, whose kinetic intensity was to the Harvey horror line what Jack Davis' exaggerated imagery was to EC Comics. In a boom-to-bust industrywide cycle of hair-raising funnybooks, Alfred Harvey's company gave EC a run for its money, often matching that kingpin publisher's ability to make a selling point of repulsion. Such cover-art originals are rare, and this one is a prime example of dizzying, nightmarish imagination. (Even the title letting, at lower left, is tilted to match the angular composition.) Ink and Chinese White watercolor over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 11" x 16". The logo is a photostatic paste-up. Moderate age-toning and horizontal wrinkling. Very Good condition.
From the Black Cat Collection.
