Peter Ellenshaw (English, 1913-2007)
Peter Ellenshaw was an English matte painter and visual effects artist whose work helped define the look of mid-century cinema, especially at Walt Disney Studios. Born in London, he began his career in the British film industry as an apprentice to matte painting pioneer Walter Percy “Pop” Day, learning the craft of creating convincing environments and vistas for the screen.
Ellenshaw worked on major productions in the U.K. before taking on projects connected to Hollywood, and he became closely associated with Disney’s live-action features beginning with Treasure Island (1950). Over the following decades he contributed matte paintings and effects work to many of the studio’s best-known films, blending painterly technique with technical precision to extend sets, cities, landscapes, and skies.
His best-known achievement is his visual effects work on Mary Poppins (1964), which earned him an Academy Award. Later recognition included being named a Disney Legend. In his later years, Ellenshaw also devoted significant time to painting beyond film work, continuing the landscape traditions that informed his screen imagery.
