Frank Miller (American, b.1957)
Frank Miller was born in 1957 in Olney, Maryland, and grew up in Montpelier, Vermont. He began his professional comics career in the late 1970s, first drawing for Gold Key and then taking work from Marvel and DC. His breakout came on Daredevil, where he moved from penciling to writing as well and developed the harder-edged, street-level storytelling that became closely associated with his name. In the 1980s, Miller widened his range with Ronin and then helped redefine Batman with The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One. He also left a lasting mark on Marvel through his work on Wolverine and through the creation of Elektra during his Daredevil run. His pages are known for sharp contrasts, tense pacing, cinematic staging, and a noir-inflected mood that carried across both superhero and crime stories. During the 1990s, Miller turned much of his attention to Sin City, a cycle of crime stories published by Dark Horse, and later created 300, extending his visual language into historical and graphic-novel form. His work also moved into film, including screenplays for RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3 and co-directing the screen adaptation of Sin City. Career highlights include early work for Gold Key, Marvel, and DC; landmark titles such as Daredevil, Ronin, The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Year One, Sin City, and 300; and his 2015 induction into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame. Sin City also received multiple Harvey and Eisner Awards, underscoring the lasting reach of Miller's work across comics and related media.
