Jack Kirby and John Severin - Strange Tales #138 Cover (Marvel, 1965). Wah-hoo -- "Sometimes the Good Guys Lose", but not on the day when the indomitable Nick Fury battled the hordes of Hydra and squashed their plot to drop the Betatron bomb! Two comics legends, Jack Kirby and John Severin, teamed to detail this unforgettable Marvel masterpiece, and ol' Nick out-Bonded James Bond in this Cold War thriller! This was the only Nick Fury cover that the two titans, Kirby and Severin, collaborated on, and its power is undeniable! The cover was carefully pieced together using several art patches, but they do little to affect the overall eye-appeal of this cover. There are several small and faint stains in the center and at the lower left, and the issue number box is a replacement; otherwise the art is in Very Good condition. The image area of the cover is 13.25" x 20"; the paper has been trimmed right to the image area. Face Front, and don't yield-- back SHIELD!

Weird Fantasy #21 Gaines FIle pedigree 12/12 (EC, 1953) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages. One of the more famous covers of the title owes its startling, eye-catching effect to the peerless tandem of Frank Frazetta and Al Williamson. And beauty is more than cover-skin deep with interior contributions by Williamson, Roy Krenkel, John Severin, Jack Kamen, and Joe Orlando. A very attractive book from an important pedigree, this copy has some of the sharpest corners and richest colors you'll ever see, and ties with one other for the distinction of being the highest-graded copy to date by CGC. Haunt of Fear #17 (#3) Gaines File pedigree (EC, 1950) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages. No copy of this issue has been graded higher to date than our offering from the files of Bill Gaines! Speaking of Mr. Gaines, he makes an appearance in one of the stories along with Al Feldstein -- we find out the origins of the Crypt of Terror, the Vault of Horror, and the Haunt of Fear, namely that the GhouLunatic narrators of those three comics captured Gaines and Feldstein and forced them to sign contracts to publish horror stories! Meanwhile, a character who happens to be named "John Severin" appears in the story "Nightmare, A Psychological Study," a tale taken to task in Seduction Of The Innocent because it "shows the same predilection for non-language expletives familiar in other comics." While we ponder what exactly that means, we'll mention that the issue has a Johnny Craig cover, with interior art by Craig, Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, and Graham Ingels. Note that while CGC has certified this comic as a Gaines File Copy, no certificate accompanies this lot. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $1,700. CGC census 9/05: 2 in 9.6, none higher.

This is the low distribution issue, pulled from many newsstands due to the "humorous" William Gaines biography, which stated he was "peddling dope near nursery schools." Wally Wood provides art for a Blackhawk parody; Bill Elder does the cover and "Outer Sanctum" story art. John Severin and Jack Davis also contribute interior art. This white-page wonder is currently unsurpassed in CGC's census report for issue #5. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $2,200. CGC census 11/05: 3 in 9.6, none higher.

Frontline Combat #1 Gaines File pedigree 5/9 (EC, 1951). The spectacular first issue of this inspired title, Frontline Combat was Harvey Kurtzman's baby. His innovative covers and creative stewardship resulted in a masterpiece that is revered to this day, and acclaimed by many as possibly the best war title in comics. Also one of the rarest Gaines File ECs, with only nine GF copies extant. A fantastic Korean war cover by Kurtzman with interior work by Wally Wood, John Severin and Kurtzman make this book a real winner. CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
