Description

John Severin Cracked #5 Cover Original Art (Major Publications, 1958). When the satirical MAD Magazine proved to be a big hit, it opened the doors for even more parody magazines to follow. Cracked was probably the "best of the rest," with talent cribbed from EC like our cover artist here, John Severin. John took the idea of extreme breakfast cereals to heart with this amazing painting of a box no 1950s housewife would ever bring home for the kiddies. The painted cover is in mixed media on illustration board, with an approximate image area of 17" x 22". There are several missing areas of type (along the side of the box, within the red square in the lower left, and the green triangle in the lower right), and there are numerous glue stains. There is also a bit of foxing around the Cracked masthead. Overall condition is Fair, but this great early cover would no doubt be a good candidate for professional restoration.
