Joe Kubert (American, 1926-2012)
Comic Book Art
Joe Kubert (American, 1926-2012): began his remarkable career in comics in 1938 as a pre-teen apprentice at Harry "A" Chesler's shop and MLJ. In the 1950s, Kubert became the managing editor of St. John Publications, where he and Norman Maurer produced the first 3-D comic book, Three Dimension Comics #1. Kubert also created Tor, the prehistoric hero who debuted in the St. John title 1,000,000 Years Ago. While perhaps most celebrated for his work at DC from the early fifties onward, on such stand-out characters as Hawkman, Viking Prince, Sgt. Rock, Enemy Ace, and Tarzan, Kubert has drawn stories for virtually every major publisher over his seven decades in the field. He also drew the syndicated newspaper strip Tales of the Green Beret, and created the acclaimed graphic novels, Abraham Stone, Fax From Sarajevo, Yossel: April 19, 1943, and Jew Gangster. Further extending his legacy in the field of comics, in 1976, along with the help his wife Muriel, he founded the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Dover, New Jersey. Joe's sons Adam and Andy carry the Kubert name into a second generation of comic creators
