Description

Joe Kubert The Brave and the Bold #34 Hawkman Story Page 14 Original Art (DC, 1961). A linchpin title in DC's resurgence as a superhero factory, The Brave and the Bold scored emphatically with its pilot-audition of the Hawkman franchise in a revamped setting. "Will Hawkman win his wings?" asked Psycho author Robert Bloch, a comics enthusiast, in 1961, adding: "That's a matter of a pinion." (Bloch also enjoyed inflicting cornball puns on his friends.) This page from the neo-Hawkman début story finds Hawkman and Hawkgirl (the Hawkwoman-to-be) attempting to capture a shape-shifting criminal in an underwater setting. Kubert's headlong vertical composition imparts a profound illusion of dizzying motion, compounded by an almost palpable illusion of wetness. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 19" (counting the stat paste-up header). Marginal color-guide notes appear to be in Kubert's handwriting. Light/moderate toning. Very Good condition.
