John Severin (American, 1921-2012)
John Severin was an American comics artist and cartoonist whose career stretched from the 1940s into the early 21st century. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, he studied at New York's High School of Music and Art and entered comics professionally after World War II. He first became widely known at EC Comics, where he drew war and Western stories for titles including Two-Fisted Tales and Frontline Combat while also contributing humor to early MAD. After EC, he continued that range across many publishers, producing Western, war, adventure, and satire for Marvel, DC, Warren, and others. Severin's work is remembered for its disciplined draftsmanship, strong sense of period detail, and unusual ease in moving between realism and caricature. That versatility made him a natural fit for combat stories, frontier settings, and humor magazines alike, and it helped sustain one of the longest careers in American comics. Among his major career highlights are his EC work in war and Western comics, his decades-long association with Cracked, and later assignments for Marvel and DC that kept him active well into his later years. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame in 2003, and his body of work remains closely tied to the history of postwar American comic art.
