Jeff Jones - Original Tarzan Oil Painting (2001). Jeffrey Jones burst forth onto the comics and illustration scene in the late 1960s, a glorious renaissance that also blessed the field with the likes of Berni Wrightson, Mike Kaluta and Barry Windsor-Smith. Unlike his contemporaries, Jones shied away from comic book work, and concentrated primarily on illustration and fine art. Held by many today to be the successor to Arthur Rackham and N.C. Wyeth, Jones' work is prized world-wide by collectors who are moved by his moody, evocative work. Offered here is a magnificent piece celebrating Tarzan, the Lord of the Jungle in a breathtaking 5' x 6' oil on canvas. In this wonderfully subtle piece, Tarzan lolls gracefully by a tree as a giant leopard strides past him. The leopard, solid in the hindquarters, seems to fade and grow indistinct the farther he moves from the Jungle Lord. Is the leopard real, or a totem animal, existing half in the real world and half in the spirit world? Either way, the piece exudes a raw and primal power that is hard to deny. A golden opportunity for the discerning fan of fine art, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and not one to be missed.

Jeff Jones - Original Oil Painting "Pelucidar - Girl in Peril" (undated). Considered by many to be one of the finest fantasy painters of modern times, Jeff Jones was originally part of a group called "The Studio", along with Bernie Wrightson, Barry Windsor-Smith, and Mike Kaluta. Although "The Studio" produced cutting-edge comics work in the early 1970s, virtually redefining and revitalizing the form, Jones opted instead to pursue a more illustrative career. Garnering fame and attention for his striking book covers, Jones is truly at his best when illustrating the works of master fantasist Edgar Rice Burroughs, as he does in this masterful painting. Lush, rich and idyllic, there is nonetheless a sense of menace and tension, subtly evoked by the woman's body language. Measuring approximately 36" x 26" on canvas, this is a piece that any collector would be proud to own.

Jeff Jones - Tarzan Portrait Oil Painting Original Art (undated). Jeff Jones made his way into the New York comics and illustration scene in the late 1960s, along with Bernie Wrightson, Mike Kaluta, and Barry Windsor-Smith. The loose-knit group of talented newcomers was sometimes referred to collectively as "the Studio." Unlike his comrades, Jones mostly shied away from comic book work, and concentrated on illustration and fine art. Offered here is a Jeff Jones portrait of Tarzan, the Lord of the Jungle. The oil on canvas painting has an image area of 15"x 19.5" and the art is in Excellent condition.

Jeff Jones - Original Oil Painting, "Swabbing the Deck/The Pirate" (undated). Part of the "New Generation" of artists that broke into comics in the 1970s (including Bernie Wrightson, Barry Windsor-Smith and Mike Kaluta), Jeff Jones quickly moved from comic art to fine art, drawing his inspiration from such classical sources as Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth. A gifted artist with an exceptional talent for conveying mood and emotion, Jones' work has been embraced as much by the gallery community as it has by comics fans. This piece, reminiscent of Wyeth at his best, shows a pirate and his pet bird in a rare quiet moment. Rendered in rich, warm tones, the piece measures approximately 24" x 32" on canvas, and is in excellent condition.

Features and strips reprinted in this issue include Mutt and Jeff by Al Smith, Toonerville Folks, Reg'lar Fellers, Skippy, Ben Webster, Wiley of Westpoint, Hop Harrigan by Jon L. Blummer, Scribbly by Sheldon Mayer, Red, White and Blue, Spot Savage by Harry Lampert, Tippie by Edwin Alger, and, beginning in this issue, Ripley's Believe It or Not. All-American Comics #27 (DC, 1941) CGC VF- 7.5 Off-white to white pages. Doiby Dickles, Green Lantern's humorous sidekick makes his first appearance with this issue. Most heroes of the Golden Age had to have a sidekick, and Green Lantern was just not complete without Doiby. He is taking out the bad guys on the cover, wearing a copy of the Green Lantern costume. Bill Finger and Irwin Hasen are the main creators for this issue with appearances by Scribbly and the Red Tornado by Sheldon Mayer, Mutt and Jeff by Bud Fisher and Al Smith, Hop Harrigan by Jon Blummer, Dr. Mid-Nite, Red,White and Blue, Atom and Sargon the Sorcerer. No danger of falling down on the ski slopes for Jeff, as he's converted his flivver into a skibob, much to Mutt's surprise. The image area measures 7" x 10.5". The title logo stat has discolored a bit; otherwise the art is in Excellent condition. A copy of the comic book is included in this lot. A terrific piece for the ski buffs and the Mutt and Jeff fans!

Unknown Artist - Original Cover Art for Mutt and Jeff #123 (Harvey, 1950s). Mutt is about to get kneecapped in this outstanding cover. The logo is a recent replacement. Very clean artwork, with only a minute amount of white-out. Might be by Al Smith, the ghost who eventually took over the strip after Fisher's death, but we are not certain. 11" x 14", with an image area of 7.5" x 10.5".
