Description

Sheldon Mayer and Al Smith (as Bud Fisher) Mutt & Jeff #2 Comic-Book Trade Brochure (DC Comics, 1940). An unusual and little-seen promotional piece -- closer to a limited art-print than a conventional brochure. Fascinating to see how Mutt & Jeff, a pioneering newspaper strip, also held its own as a hot-ticket comic book in a dawning age of costumed-hero characters. The full-color area is an actual cover proof, tipped in by hand onto the pre-printed four-page B&W gatefold. Mayer, one of the founding talents of the DC line, is the cover artist. Smith, who provides the B&W art, had long since taken charge of the pioneering feature, inasmuch as creator Fisher had lost interest, except in the revenues. (Smith would remain with the strip for nearly 50 years, though denied a byline until the mid-1950s.) Dimensions: 11" x 15". Horizontally creased from file storage, with light wrinkling. Very Good condition.
