In 1994 Spillane recalled half a century later the genesis of this story (Alter Ego #11, page 43). He claims to have been in the Funnies, Inc. studio with Ed Robbins and another whose name he could not recall, while Ray Gill "came popping in and out with an idea chart." In another location a second bunch of creators were working on the story simultaneously. Carl Pfeufer had become the main Sub-Mariner artist earlier that same year, replacing creator Bill Everett who had been conscripted. The rather barrel-chested hero seen in this story certainly looks like his work in other issues.
