C. C. Beck (American, 1910-1989)
C. C. Beck (born Charles Clarence Beck) was an American comic book artist and cartoonist best known as the defining artist of Fawcett Comics’ Captain Marvel—known today as Shazam. Born in Minnesota in 1910, he trained as an artist before moving into professional illustration and comics work.
Beck co-created Captain Marvel with writer Bill Parker in 1939–40, developing a clean, bold style that helped set the character apart from other superheroes of the era. His work on Captain Marvel (and related Marvel Family features) became one of the signature looks of Golden Age comics and remained central to how the character is remembered.
After Fawcett’s comics line folded in the 1950s, Beck stepped away from mainstream comics for a time and continued working as a commercial illustrator, later returning to Captain Marvel/Shazam material in various forms as the character’s publishing history shifted.
Beck studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Minnesota. His later recognition includes Hall of Fame honors, reflecting his lasting influence on American comic art and character design.
