Rand Holmes was a Canadian cartoonist and illustrator best known for his work in underground comix. He was born in Truro, Nova Scotia, in 1942 and grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, where he developed an early interest in comics while supporting himself as a sign painter. That practical work shaped his brushwork and lettering and fed into the strong draftsmanship that became a hallmark of his art. Holmes moved to Vancouver in 1969 and soon became closely associated with the Georgia Straight. There he created Harold Hedd, the anarchic hippie character most often linked to his name, while also contributing covers, political cartoons, and stories to publications including White Lunch Comix, Fog City Comics, and other underground titles in Canada and the United States. His work is known for its detailed line, satirical bite, and countercultural spirit. While his stories often embraced the unruly tone of underground comics, his drawing remained unusually polished and carefully rendered, reflecting the influence of artists such as Wally Wood and Will Eisner. In the 1980s, Holmes left Vancouver for Lasqueti Island off the coast of British Columbia, where he continued drawing and painting and increasingly devoted time to oil painting. Among the key markers of his career are his long association with the Georgia Straight, the lasting popularity of Harold Hedd, and his later body of paintings and drawings made on Lasqueti Island. He died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, in 2002. His work was later recognized with induction into the Joe Shuster Awards Hall of Fame, and a retrospective exhibition of his art was presented on Lasqueti Island in 2007.
