Bud Counihan - Original Comic Strip Art for Betty Boop Daily dated 10-23-34 (King Features Syndicate, 1934). A true American icon, Betty Boop's image can be seen today on everything from t-shirts to lunchboxes and from posters to wall clocks. Astonishingly, for someone so universally recognized and beloved, she appeared in only a handful of animated features and comic strips in the 1930s. Her first appearance, as a sexy dog, was in the Fleischer Studios short "Dizzy Dishes" by future Disney legend Grim Natwick, released in 1930. The following year, slightly redesigned, she appeared in "Mask-A-Raid," and from there her career took off. Phenomenally popular throughout the 1930s, she was deemed too sexy for the Hayes Administration's tastes, and her last Fleischer feature played in 1939. Her comic strip career was even shorter, running from 1934 until 1938, with art by the talented Bud Counihan, who was Chic Young's former assistant on Blondie. These strips, of which only a handful are known to exist today, focused on Betty's career as an up-and-coming Hollywood starlet. The example offered here, with an image area of approximately 19.75" x 5", and in excellent condition, features Betty in every panel. It will be an exciting piece for any fan of the "Boop-oop-a-doop" girl.

Bud Counihan - Original Comic Strip Art for Betty Boop Daily dated 11-16-34 (King Features Syndicate, 1934). One of Hollywood's sexiest cartoon stars, Betty Boop had a relatively short career, but she is still fondly remembered. Created by legendary Disney animator "Grim" Natwick for the Max Fleischer cartoon "Dizzy Dishes" in 1930, Betty was an instant success. The very epitome of the "flapper" girl, Betty appeared in Fleischer cartoons throughout the 1930s, and in her own comic strip from 1934 through 1938. The strip was drawn by Bud Counihan, who served as an assistant to Blondie artist Chic Young, and originals have proven to be exceedingly rare. In fact, Jerry Weist, in his Comic Art Price Guide, Second Edition notes: "There are less than ten dailies known and few Sundays known to exist." With an image area of approximately 19.75" x 4.75", and in immaculate condition, this is a truly lovely piece. Blue pencil is used to add highlights throughout, which gives the piece an extremely attractive appearance.

Bud Counihan - Original Comic Strip Art for Betty Boop Daily dated 11-2-34 (King Features Syndicate, 1934). Betty just seems to finds fans wherever she goes! Out West to make a new picture, the "Boop-oop-a-doop" girl is crowned Princess by an admiring tribe of Native Americans. Betty, originally designed and developed by the legendary "Grim" Natwick, got her start in Max Fleischer's animated cartoons, and soon moved onto the comics page for a brief four year run. Deemed too sexy by America's moral watchdogs, the Hayes Administration, Betty made her last comic strip appearance in 1938, and her last Fleischer cartoon in 1939. That didn't stop her from becoming an American icon however, and today her image can be seen on everything imaginable. Betty seems to be as popular with today's crowd as she was with the Depression era generation, a staggering achievement when one considers the paucity of her output. Original Betty Boop strips are exceptionally rare. Jerry Weist in his Comic Art Price Guide, Second Edition estimates that only ten to exist today. Several are being offered in this sale, which may represent your only opportunity to acquire one of these rare gems. This example has an image area of approximately 19.75" x 4.75", and is in excellent condition.

Grim Natwick - Female Nude Sketch Original Art (undated). Grim Natwick was one of the greatest animators who ever lived. He created the character of Betty Boop, probably the only female animated cartoon character to achieve world-wide popularity, and then joined the Walt Disney Studios for the sole purpose of helping to animate the lead character in the world's first feature cartoon, "Snow White." Well over twice the age of most of his colleagues, Natwick left the Disney studio after "Snow White", joining his former boss Max Fleischer for his first feature "Gulliver's Travels", and later worked for UPA Studios. His work on the character of Snow White, however, will always remain the highlight of his long career and one of the cornerstones of that film's greatness and lasting power for more than sixty years. This lovely 19.5" x 27" charcoal sketch on grey toned paper is a wonderful representation of his prowess with charcoal, as well as his knowledge of anatomy in motion. This is a side of Natwick's artistic prowess that is rarely seen, making it even more attractive and desirable. In Excellent condition and signed by Grim Natwick. From the collection of Richard and Wendy Pini. Richard says, "I knew the name Grim Natwick from his work in animation. What I did not know was that he (like probably every other animator who ever lived) indulged in sexier sketches when he wasn't at the light table. As with the other "naughty" pieces elsewhere in this collection, I was tickled to add to my collection these examples of artwork from a master animator that would never make it to the screen.".

Walt Disney Studios -- "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Original Pencil Design Sketch. (1930s). This lovely concept drawing of Snow White was one of Grim Natwick's more childlike designs. Natwick struggled for months trying to capture the level of realism and innocence that Walt Disney demanded for this first feature film. Here is a concept of Snow White by Natwick that is close to the final figure used in the film. This lot also includes a signature card and a brass plaque inscribed: " Original Stylist drawing of Snow White by Grim Natwick." Snow White is 3.5" x 6.5" and the paper area measures 7.75" x 9.0"
