Jumbo Comics #1-8 Mile High pedigree Group (Fiction House, 1938-39) Condition: Average VF+.
Significant, scarce high-grade comics are our stock-in-trade, but seldom if ever have we offered a run of issues that brings those factors together the way this one does. Consider that these are the huge oversized issues from the early run of the title -- each one measures 10.5 x 14.5", which for today's collector means they're far too large for CGC to encapsulate, and for collectors over the past sixty-plus years, it's meant that these books are quite difficult to store and keep in nice condition. Finding any of these oversized copies in anything above VG would qualify as a triumph. But these Mile Highs took our breath away!
Indeed, any copy of these first eight is quite a find! We had never laid eyes on #5-8 before, and issue #7 even holds the distinction of being a "10" on the scarcity index of Gerber's
Photo-Journal Guide To Comic Books
, a rating which Gerber assigned to comics with less than 5 known copies in existence.
The condition is up to the usual standard for the Edgar Church books, which is amazing for comics in this unwieldy size. The page quality is white wherever white pages are possible, and what we mean by that is that some of the issues, like #1, were printed on alternating red and green paper! All that separates these copies from being NM- or above is some minor edge stress here and there, but it's of the kind that wouldn't be bothersome on even a regular-size copy, never mind one of these oversized giants.
Issue #1, in VF/NM condition
, is the most striking copy of the bunch, and of course the most valuable book in the group. It's the first published comic book work by Jack Kirby (as he is known today; he called himself "Jack Curtiss" in one story and "Curt Davis" in another). It's also got two other major premieres: the issue is the first comic book published by Fiction House, and it's got the first appearance of Sheena, Queen of

Sad Sack Comics #1 File Copy (Harvey, 1949) CGC NM 9.4 Cream to off-white pages.
This amazing copy, which has been recently submitted to CGC, currently occupies the top spot in their census for this book. The reason Harvey fans will go to great lengths to get this issue: it's got the first appearance of Little Dot, who would go on to star in her own comic for over 20 years. But Sad Sack topped Dot when it came to longevity, as this series produced Harvey's longest continuous comic book title run, 287 issues! One reason why this first issue is hard to find is because it featured Sad Sack as a civilian, an unwelcome change at the time to fans who loved his adventures as a soldier and were loath to spend their dimes to see him in this new role. And that's despite a great infinity cover by George Baker! The swift kick to the pants shown here mirrors what most comic dealers would give anyone offering only the Guide price for a high-grade copy; for our part, we expect spirited bidding when this one comes up for auction. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $900. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 9.4, none higher.

Suspense Comics #2 Mile High pedigree (Continental Magazines, 1944) CGC NM 9.4 White pages.
Copies of this title are prized for their rarity and esoteric quality, and this copy adds the dimension of being from Edgar Church's famed collection. A Gerber "scarce," and CGC hasn't certified another copy nicer than FN 6.0. The first appearance of the Mask is here, and contributing artists include Nina Albright (cover), L. B. Cole, John Giunta, and Don Rico. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $3,800. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 9.4, none higher.

Silver Streak Comics #1 (Lev Gleason, 1939) CGC VF+ 8.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Here's the first comic book by the company that would soon be known as Lev Gleason Publications (here still called Rhoda Publications with the abbreviation "YG" for Your Guide). As the publisher of
Crime Does Not Pay
,
Daredevil Comics
and others, the company would go on to be one of the most successful Golden Age publishers. This issue's content came from the "shop" of artists known as Funnies Inc., which included big names like Jack Cole and Bill Everett. No mystery how the title got its name -- there's actually metallic ink on the cover as a little gimmick to stand out at newsstands. One thing we've always found peculiar about this issue is that it's got an ad for Timely's
Marvel Mystery Comics
#2 on the inside back cover (the connection being that the Timely book was also a Funnies Inc. production). Also notable about this issue is that it's got the first appearance of the Claw, drawn by Cole. Claw was one of the first supervillains in comics, period, and being fanged, clawed, huge, and evil, not necessarily in that order, he remains one of the more formidable foes comics have seen. All of this contributes to the issue's Overstreet ranking as one of the 100 most valuable Golden Age books; the catch is that it's harder to find than most of the others, earning Overstreet's "scarce" designation. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $7,500; VF/NM 9.0 value = $12,250. CGC census 4/06: 1 in 8.5, 2 higher.

Funnies #57 (Dell, 1941) CGC NM 9.4 Cream pages.
It's the first comic book appearance of Captain Midnight-- yes, Dell had him first! In fact, these Dell stories were closer to the radio-show version of the character; he's a heroic pilot here, not the quasi-superhero he became over at Fawcett. And his origin is told here as well. To date, only the Mile High copy has been graded higher than this sterling 9.4 specimen. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $5,400. CGC census 4/06: 1 in 9.4, 1 higher.

Doll Man Quarterly #1 Denver pedigree (Quality, 1941) CGC NM 9.4 White pages.
This is the only copy of this issue graded above 8.0 as of this writing, and it doesn't even have much competition from the Mile High, which is a VF- 7.5! The shrinking superhero of
Feature Comics
fame is joined in this debut issue by the likes of the Black Gondolier and Justin Wright (who fights for all that's

Special Edition Comics #1 (Fawcett, 1940) CGC VF+ 8.5 Cream to off-white pages.
It's the first comic book devoted entirely to Captain Marvel! If you believe the lore, the reason for the "Special Edition" tag was to provide a bit of deniability in case of a lawsuit by DC: "Captain Marvel, star of his own book? Whatever gave you that idea?" Whatever the case, the cat was soon out of the bag, as
Captain Marvel Adventures
followed and became the bestselling series in all of comics. C. C. Beck drew this issue's now-famous cover. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $5,873; VF/NM 9.0 value = $9,537. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 8.5, 5 higher.

Overstreet is quick to point out the classic Nazi war cover of this exciting third issue. As is the case with many Mile High copies, this exquisite example holds the highest grade awarded by CGC to date. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $1,775. CGC census 3/06: 2 in 9.4, none higher.

Archie Comics #1 (Archie, 1942) CGC GD+ 2.5 Off-white pages.
Grab this book in any grade, period! We've never seen a high-grade copy (the highest-graded in CGC's census to date is just a 6.5) and it's seldom that a collector is willing to part with any copy of this #1 issue. While not Archie's first appearance, it's one of the key issues of the thousands of comics he's starred in. For one thing, it has what you might call the origin of the Archie-Veronica relationship, as we learn how Archie read about the blue-blooded Park Avenue debutante-to-be and wrote to invite her to his prom in Riverdale (yeah, there was a different, and boring, story of their first meeting in
Pep Comics
#26, but this story replaced it from this point forward). This book also has the very first appearance of Mrs. Andrews, Archie's mom. And of course, it's the first issue of a series that's still in publication today, at issue #565 and counting. It's also considered the first teen comic by Overstreet... how many more reasons do you need? CGC notes, "Cover detached." Overstreet 2006 GD 2.0 value = $1,333. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 2.5, 9 higher.

Funnies #61 Mile High pedigree (Dell, 1941) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages.
Andy Panda made his debut in this series here, close on the heels of his first appearance in
Crackajack Funnies
just two months earlier. And Andy's drawn by the artist we most associate with the character, Walter Lantz! Meanwhile, there's a neat-o war cover by Dan Gormley, featuring Captain Midnight. Phantasmo, who was Dell's first superhero, is on hand as well. As for the condition of this copy, it's pretty much perfection from top to bottom! Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $1,225. Suspense Comics #3 (Continental Magazines, 1944) CGC FR/GD 1.5 Off-white to white pages.
This issue has been the object of frenzied collector interest ever since its Alex Schomburg bondage cover was featured on the frontispiece of Gerber's
Photo-Journal
. Most who proceeded to hunt for the comic came up empty -- this is a Gerber "9", or "very rare," and called "scarce" by Overstreet, all for good reason. And while finding one at all is tough enough, another hurdle is that many of the copies out there are incomplete, with the centerfold story "83 Days On A Life-Raft" often missing due to the unorthodox binding process used by this publisher. We breathed a hearty sigh of relief when we paged through this copy and found the "Life-Raft" story present and accounted for. The other interior story of note is a 7-pager by the highly collectible L. B. Cole. This issue is ranked among the 100 most valuable Golden Age comics by Overstreet, and takes a back seat to very few in terms of collector excitement. Don't miss out on this copy of a Schomburg classic! CGC notes, "1 large piece of tape on spine of cover & 1 large piece of tape on spine of interior cover." Overstreet 2006 GD 2.0 value = $2,000. CGC census 4/06: 1 in 1.5, 7 higher.

The Funnies #50 Mile High pedigree (Dell, 1940) CGC NM/MT 9.8 Off-white to white pages.

Doc Savage Comics #1 (Street & Smith, 1940) CGC VF- 7.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Doc Savage is generally considered to be America's first superhero, and much about the character influenced the costumed heroes of the comics (he had a utility belt, a gadget-equipped car, a Fortress of Solitude, etc. etc.). So it was only right that the Doc got a comic book series of his own. This first issue began by adapting the novel "The Land of Terror" by Lester Dent (writing as "Kenneth Robeson"). Also appearing in this comic were a number of other pulp stars, most notably Walter Gibson's Norgil the Magician. A great painted cover leads off the issue. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $3,395. Is this a

lists it as such, and the art does have some of the artist's characteristic touches. It's signed "JCA," but since Kirby, whose real name was Jacob Kurtzberg, used various aliases like "Jack Curtiss" before settling on the Kirby name, that doesn't preclude this being the work of the "King." This somewhat obscure title lasted only up to this third and final issue. This fantastic Edgar Church copy is easily the best of the three copies currently graded by CGC. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $650. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 9.6, none higher.

All-New Comics #15 File Copy (Harvey, 1947) Condition: NM-.
Just try to find this incredibly hard-to-find issue anywhere else -- it received a scarcity rating of "10," or "unique" in Gerber's
Photo-Journal
, the highest scarcity rating the author assigned. That's because this 32-pager, measuring 5 1/2" by 8 1/2", was distributed to mail subscribers only. There's a notation on the first page that reads "For the present emergency, newsstand sales will be temporarily discontinued and subscribers alone will receive copies of these issues." The emergency in question was simply a glut of comics on the stands, resulting in newsdealers shunning less popular titles. Thus, this book,
Stuntman
, and a couple of others were phased out in this fashion, while the "emergency" didn't affect the likes of
Green Hornet Comics
or
Black Cat Comics
. Speaking of the Black Cat, she appears in this issue, as does Joe Palooka. Not appearing are the Boy Heroes, which is odd because they're featured on the cover! Note that CGC will not encapsulate any copy of this comic because it is considered all but impossible to authenticate. This copy's provenance as a Harvey File Copy allows you to bid with confidence! Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $1,350.

Amazing-Man Comics #5 (Centaur, 1939) CGC Apparent FN- 5.5 Extensive (P) Cream to off-white pages.
Don't let the issue number fool you -- this is actually the first issue of
Amazing-Man
, featuring the title character's origin and first appearance by Bill Everett. Well-known artists Carl Burgos and Tarpe Mills also contributed to the issue. Centaur Publications' entire output is difficult to find, this book especially so -- Overstreet and Gerber both rate this issue as "rare," with an estimated 11 to 20 copies still in existence. As only one unrestored copy of this book has been graded above GD+ by CGC to date, this restored specimen is obviously one of the better copies available. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cover cleaned, interior lightened, reinforced." Overstreet 2006 GD 2.0 value = $1,389; VG 4.0 value =$2,778; FN 6.0 value = $4,167.

Fighting Yank #1 (Nedor Publications, 1942) CGC VF+ 8.5 White pages.
One of the most popular wartime comic book superheroes, the Fighting Yank was awarded his own title within a year of distinguishing himself in the pages of
Startling Comics
. Mystico and Wonder Man appear in back-up stories. On a sadder note, this issue was the last appearance of the Rio Kid. The bondage cover is by Alex Schomburg, and the interior art is by Jack Binder. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $1,756; VF/NM 9.0 value = $2,778. CGC census 3/06: 2 in 8.5, 1 higher.

Tally-Ho Comics #nn Vancouver pedigree (Baily Publication, 1944) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages.
It's Frank Frazetta's first comic book work -- how could you
not
want it? And we hasten to add that this is the highest-graded copy yet certified, with the white pages (and overall fabulous condition) that characterize all of the Vancouver books. Frazetta, assisting John Giunta, worked on the Snowman story in this issue. Consider this issue's 1944 cover date and Frazetta's 1928 date of birth, and it'll confirm all you've heard about how Frazetta's talent manifested himself at an early age. A Frazetta collector who's missing this issue can't possibly pass this by, and even if you have a copy, it's time to upgrade! Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $575. Boy Explorers Comics #2 File Copy (Harvey, 1946) Condition: VF/NM.
A Harvey file copy is a nice acquisition in any case, but having a file copy is of critical importance here! That's because a black and white comic like this one is difficult if not impossible to authenticate (CGC will not encapsulate #2 for that reason), and provenance is therefore of the essence. This Simon and Kirby issue, a 32-pager measuring 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, is rated "scarce" by Overstreet, and Gerber assigned it an "8." That's because it never even hit newsstands -- as the publisher's note explains, "For the present emergency, newsstand sales will be temporarily discontinued and subscribers alone will receive copies of these issues." The "emergency" was simply that after paper rationing was discontinued, the major publishers flooded the market with comic series in an effort to squeeze out competition, and newsdealers only had room for top sellers. That meant the end not only of this series, another fledgling S&K effort,
Stuntman
, and a couple of other Harvey titles. This is undoubtedly one of the toughest items to find for the Jack Kirby completist, and the unquestioned authenticity of this copy means that Harvey collectors, S&K fans, and rarity-hunters should be zeroing in on this one. Overstreet 2006 VF/NM 9.0 value = $988; NM- 9.2 value = $1,350.

Doc Savage Comics #4 Mile High pedigree (Street & Smith, 1941) CGC VF+ 8.5 White pages.
Although not graded as high as some of the other Mile Highs thanks to a small chip missing from the bottom center, this Edgar Church copy is still the highest-graded that CGC has certified to date. George Tuska has been credited with providing art for the issue. The cover bears the tiny signature "H 'A' C" -- since the only person we know of who put his middle initial in quotation marks that way was funnybook impresario Harry "A" Chesler, we can only assume that a Chesler studio staff artist was responsible for the cover art. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $650; VF/NM 9.0 value = $1,025. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 8.5, none higher.

Pocket Comics #2 Mile High pedigree (Harvey, 1941) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages.
This is the second issue of the title that gave Harvey Comics its start, and we've got the highest-graded copy yet certified. Al Harvey's concept for a new twist on the comic book was this: 96 pages (100 if you count covers) for a dime, as opposed to the 64 pages most comics offered, and half the size of a regular comic. The format was quickly phased out, reportedly because the small size made it too easy for light-fingered kids to shoplift, but it gave Harvey his start in the funnybook business. This issue's most notable character is the Black Cat (who would soon have her own series), but there's also the Spirit of '76, who battles Satan, no less, and an appearance by the nefarious Hitler. The cover is by Joe Simon. We all know that comics in oddball sizes are tough to store and keep in nice condition, and apparently Edgar Church had the same problem. Still, this is the only copy of the issue that CGC has certified to date. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $406. CGC census 03/06: 1 in 8.0, none higher.

Punch Comics #1 (Chesler, 1941) CGC NM- 9.2 Cream to off-white pages.
This was only the third comic book series for Harry "A" Chesler, and while this first issue isn't called "rare" by the price guides, this is the first copy we've seen here at Heritage and one of only two unrestored copies to be certified by CGC to date. The cover hero is the Sky Chief; the issue's other characters include Mr. E and Hale the Magician. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $1,800. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 9.2, none higher.
