Comic Artist Irv Novick American, 1916-2004
Irving Novick began his long career in comics in 1939 in the Harry “A” Chesler workshop and quickly became MLJ’s best known artist illustrating their top super-hero characters, the Shield and the Hangman. He joined the Army in 1943 and when he was discharged, he went to work in advertising from 1946-1951. His frequent collaborator at MLJ, Robert Kanigher, was at DC and recruited Novick back into the comic field where he drew war stories throughout the 1950s. Aside from that and drawing romance stories, he also co-created the Silent Knight in The Brave and the Bold #1. Novick left comics in the early 1960s for an advertising job at Johnstone and Cushing but was unhappy. Returning to DC, he started once again with war stories but was quickly put to use on Superman related stories and a stint on Wonder Woman before a lengthy tour on Batman and many years on the Flash.
