Description

Irv Novick Capt. Storm #11 Cover Original Art (DC, 1966). This life-or-death struggle aboard a careening torpedo demonstrates the truism that anything can happen in the comics. Toward the beginning of a long-term identification with such superhero books as Batman and The Flash, Novick persisted with his established war-comics presence, achieving such splendid results as this suicide-mission scene for heroic Captain Storm, DC's "wooden-legged P.T. boat skipper." Novick had retrenched as an advertising-agency artist earlier in the 1960s, but was lured back to DC with an uncommonly generous freelance contract. Novick's signature here (in ballpoint ink at lower right) appears to be a post-publication afterthought -- either that, or possibly cropped out in the printing. No such signature appears on the published cover. Ink over blue pencil on Bristol board with transparent logotype overlay (hand-painted) and an image area of 10" x 15". Toned, with adhesive residue and minor paint erosion in the logotype, and overall in Very Good condition.
From the Irv Novick Family Collection.
