Hergé (Belgian, 1907-1983)
Hergé, the pen name of Georges Remi, was a Belgian cartoonist best known as the creator of The Adventures of Tintin. He began drawing at a young age and developed his early career working in illustration and newspaper comics in Brussels. In 1929, he introduced Tintin in the children’s supplement Le Petit Vingtième, launching a series that would grow into one of the most widely recognized works in European comics.
Over the following decades, Hergé refined both his storytelling and visual approach, producing a series of Tintin albums that combined adventure, humor, and meticulous research. His work is closely associated with the “ligne claire” style, characterized by clean, even line work, flat color, and precise, readable compositions. This approach allowed for clarity in both character expression and detailed backgrounds, becoming a defining influence on generations of comic artists.
As the Tintin series expanded, Hergé established Studios Hergé to support the production of the albums and related projects. Working with a team of assistants, he maintained a high level of visual consistency while continuing to guide the creative direction of the series. The stories were translated into numerous languages and adapted for a wide international audience, contributing to Tintin’s lasting cultural presence.
Hergé’s work has been widely published and exhibited, and Tintin remains a central figure in the history of 20th-century comics. His clear-line style and narrative approach continue to influence artists and illustrators, and original artwork associated with his studio is held in collections and featured in exhibitions dedicated to comic art and illustration.
