Description
PLATINUM
Hergé (Georges Remi dit) Les Musées Belges de Marine
d'Alexandre Berqueman Cover and Illustration Original
Art (Établissements Généraux d'Imprimerie, 1943). Here we offer
a unique piece in the history of Tintin's adventures. In the early
'40s, Alexandre Berqueman, a maritime enthusiast, and Hergé met on
the theme of the navy, which led directly to the beginning of a
long friendship. Berqueman became Hergé's naval advisor, helping
him to keep as close as possible to naval reality in Tintin's
adventures, especially in The Secret of the Unicorn.
Berqueman published two books on the sea, including Les Musées
Belges de Marine in 1943.The cover of this book, limited to 600 copies in soft cover, was designed by Hergé. This original ink cover is included in this lot, and features various original pencil sketches and notes by Hergé on its front and back.
This lot also includes one of Tintin's most famous original illustrations. Done in 100% Hergé ink and watercolor, it shows Tintin in the company of Haddock and Snowy at the entrance to the Musée National de Marine. This visual was used in 1957 as an end-of-year greetings card.
But that's not all: the inside pages, featuring boats, were watercolored by hand by Maurice Seghers. Unlike the 600 copies produced in soft cover, the unique book on offer was originally produced in a luxurious leather binding, protected by a paper house, and housed in a hard slipcase.
Finally, an official letter of thanks from the Royal Palace of Laeken, dated April 21, 1943, and signed by the Governor of His Royal Highness, Viscount G. du Parc, is also included, indeed a copy of the book was presented to the future King Baudouin, King of Belgium.
The cover is 6.25" x 8.5", with a crease in the middle and stains. The original illustration is 6" x 5.5". Light handling. The top edge is gold-plated. Small tear to one edge of slip panel. Signed. Needless to say, this copy is worthy of a museum. Premium. In Very Good condition.
