Who is Comic Artist Alex Toth?
Alex Toth’s career spanned an incredible period in the evolution of comics. Beyond his contribution to DC Comics, Marvel, and others, his work for Hanna-Barbera in the 1960s and 1970s gave us some of the most iconic cartoons of the era. He was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1990 and received an Inkpot Award in 1981. His work has found a whole new generation of fans thanks in large part to Adult Swim and their use of his animation in the series Sealab 2021, Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, and others.

Initially, Alex Toth became famous for a number of DC comics he drew in the late 1940s and 1950s. His work on All Star Comics is best remembered for being when the Black Canary first joined the Justice Society of America. He also helped to introduce the dog Streak, a beloved pet of the Green Lantern that was eventually so popular he became a featured character in several of the comics. Later, he created the character Space Ghost for Hanna-Barbera. He would follow this up with The Herculoids and Birdman and the Galaxy Trio. This culminated in producing the series, Super Friends, a huge hit at the time.

Born to immigrants, Alex Toth got started in comics by starting at DC Comics in 1948, just one short year after graduating from the New York School of Industrial Art., an illustrator from the start, Troth’s work grew in demand. His bold, colorful characters were able to walk a fine line between adventure and comedy, making them extremely popular with children of that era. He would eventually parlay this same eye into a series of producing jobs for Hanna-Barbera in the 1960s and 1970s.
