Jean Giraud (Moebius) (French, 1938-2012)

Jean Giraud was a French artist and one of the most influential figures in modern comics, working under his own name as well as the pseudonym Moebius. He began his career in the 1950s and gained early recognition for his realistic draftsmanship in Western comics, most notably as the artist of the long-running Blueberry series written by Jean-Michel Charlier. His work in this phase is marked by careful observation, strong line work, and cinematic storytelling. In the late 1960s and 1970s, Giraud began producing more experimental and imaginative work under the name Moebius. These projects explored science fiction, fantasy, and surreal themes, often with minimal dialogue and a focus on atmosphere and visual invention. His clean, fluid line and inventive world-building became defining features of his style. As a co-founder of the French magazine Métal Hurlant, he helped shape a new direction for European comics that emphasized artistic freedom and mature storytelling. Giraud’s influence extended beyond comics into film and design. He contributed concept art and visual development to several major science fiction films, bringing his distinctive vision to projects such as Alien, Tron, and The Fifth Element. His work is recognized for its ability to blend detailed realism with imaginative, otherworldly environments, and it has inspired generations of artists across multiple disciplines. Over the course of his career, Giraud received numerous honors in the comics world, including major awards at international festivals.
