Batman #14 (DC, 1943) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
No copy of this issue has been graded higher by CGC to date, so have fun feasting your eyes on this one! We've seen too many lesser copies of this that show Batman peeling back the page to reveal an expanse of "smudgy" white, that's not the case on this original-owner copy. This issue's cover by Jerry Robinson is just the second cover appearance of the Penguin. As if the Bumbershoot Bandit weren't enough, Batman and Robin also bust up a Nazi spy ring in the tale "Swastika over the White House." Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $4,400. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 9.4, none higher.

Batman #20 (DC, 1943) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
We haven't seen a copy to match this one, and neither has CGC as of this writing! This issue is known for being the first cover appearance of the Batmobile. Inside the issue, the Joker appears, and a backup feature has some pretty distressing events, as Dick Grayson's uncle tries to get custody of the Boy Wonder. The book has a Dick Sprang cover and interior art by Jack Burnley, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $3,200. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 9.2, none higher.

Batman #33 Double Cover (DC, 1946) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
It'll be Christmas in May for this lot's winning bidder! And if you needed any additional reason to go after the highest-graded copy of this issue, the double cover should certainly seal the deal. Dick Sprang supplied the art for the Yuletide scene. Not everyone involved in the issue is in the spirit of giving, though -- take the Penguin, who's in the spirit of
stealing
, with only Batman and Robin to stand in his way. The interior art is by Win Mortimer. CGC notes, "1st cover 8.5, interior cover 9.4." Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $1,750. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 9.4, none higher.

Comic Cavalcade #1 (DC, 1942) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages.
This newly-slabbed original-owner copy has taken over second place in CGC's census, with only one 8.5 copy topping it (note that the Mile High copy of this book is a mere FN/VF). This is hard to find in grade because it's square bound, and also because kids who owned this comic read their copies over and over! After all, the book's got Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and the Flash, and those are just the stars on the front part of this wraparound cover! Flip the book over and you'll see Wildcat, the Ghost Patrol, Scribbly, and more. The ensemble cover is credited to Frank Harry; contributing interior art are Sheldon Moldoff, Sheldon Mayer, E. E. Hibbard, and H. G. Peter. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $6,573. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 8.0, 1 higher.

Batman #1 (DC, 1940) Condition: PR.
One of the delights of this original-owner collection is that the
Batman
run starts with this very first issue. Bad news first: this copy's missing the back cover. But that will open the door for some lucky bidder to secure a copy of this key book at a
relative
bargain price -- we say "relative" because there should still be plenty of bidding interest on one of the most sought-after issues in comics, a book that's got the first appearances of the Joker
and
Catwoman and one of the most famous covers in the hobby. Overstreet 2006 GD 2.0 value = $7,317.

Wonder Woman #7 Double Cover (DC, 1943) CGC NM 9.4 Cream to off-white pages.
This is one of the harder issues of this series to find, and one of the only ones to be rated "uncommon" by Gerber. No copy has been graded higher by CGC as of this writing. Wonder Woman's creator William Moulton Marston was a card-carrying feminist, and his convictions come through in this issue's cover and story. H. G. Peter handled art chores as usual. Note that the outer front cover has one 5-inch tear and one 2-inch tear which may not be readily apparent on our scan, accounting for the low outer-cover grade. CGC notes, "1st cover 3.0, interior cover 9.4." Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $1,900. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 9.4, none higher.

Sensation Comics #1 (DC, 1942) CGC Qualified FN 6.0 Off-white pages.
Our excellent original-owner run of
Sensation
starts with this very first issue, one of the 30 most valuable comic books according to Overstreet's ranking. It's got the second appearance of Wonder Woman, just a month after her debut in
All Star Comics
#8. This is basically Part Two of her origin -- the scene shifts from Paradise Island to the USA, and we see her arrive Stateside, acquire her "Diana Prince" secret identity, and more (by the way, this is the story that became the first episode of the 1970s TV show). Also making their debuts were Wildcat, Mr. Terrific, and Sheldon Moldoff's Black Pirate. Jon Blummer is credited with the issue's cover, and of course the Wonder Woman story is by artist H. G. Peter and writer William Moulton Marston. CGC notes, "Half of 12th page cut out, affects story. Incomplete." Overstreet 2006 GD 2.0 value= $2,660; VG 4.0 value = $5,320; FN 6.0 value = $7,980.

Plastic Man #nn (#1) (Quality, 1943) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
This the nicest copy of #1 we've ever offered! We've had the Rockford and Crowley copies in our previous auctions, but this specimen from Harold Curtis' original-owner collection tops even those books. The character is a comic book classic, and the stories and art by Jack Cole still entertain today. This issue started off a thirteen-year run. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $2,724; VF/NM 9.0 value = $4,612. CGC census 2/06: 2 in 8.5, 1 higher.

Detective Comics #38 (DC, 1940) CGC GD- 1.8 Off-white pages.
Sure, we'd love a VF or NM copy of the origin and first appearance of Robin -- who wouldn't? But here's a copy that you can acquire without having to call for a Brinks truck, and while the grade of 1.8 might conjure up visions of unsightly damage, this copy "suffers" only from some well-meaning amateur repairs. You can still enjoy the famous cover image, and you're getting a copy with off-white pages at that! Not bad at all for one of the 15 most valuable Golden Age books. Overstreet 2006 GD 2.0 value = $3,611. CGC census 2/06: 2 in 1.8, 20 higher.

Daredevil Comics #1 Daredevil Battles Hitler (Lev Gleason, 1941) CGC FN- 5.5 Off-white pages.
This cover never gets old no matter how many times we see it -- master race, schmaster race, you Phew-rer you! Bob Wood and Charles Biro were the artists who retouched Hitler's face into a silly expression and added his foes, namely the entire cast of
Silver Streak Comics
. Our spiky-belted hero, Daredevil, had to do double duty and battle the fearsome Claw as well. Overstreet 2006 FN 6.0 value = $3,582. CGC census 2/06: 1 in 5.5, 11 higher.

"The Commandos are coming" was the battle cry of these Simon and Kirby creations, who got their own book here after appearing in

. And the issue's got a guest-appearance by the Sandman, whom Simon & Kirby were drawing in
Adventure Comics
concurrently. Overstreet calls attention to the issue's "classic World War II cover" by S&K. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $3,647. CGC census 2/06: 2 in 8.0, 4 higher.

Detective Comics #58 (DC, 1941) CGC FN/VF 7.0 Cream to off-white pages.
The Penguin waddled into his first appearance here, taking the first step to becoming one the few comic villains who's a household name. The character had his signature look from the very start, in a story drawn by Bob Kane, Robinson, and George Roussos. The usual assortment of backup stories includes the last installment of the Speed Saunders feature which had been appearing in this title since issue #1. The cover is by Fred Ray and Jerry Robinson. Sensation Comics #4 (DC, 1942) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages.
This is the nicest copy in CGC's census by a healthy margin -- as of this writing, only the Rockford copy at 7.0 is even close! It's the first appearance of Baroness Paula Von Gunther, Wonder Woman's early archfoe (who even made it into the 1970s TV show, by the way). Also, the Wildcat feature has the debut of that hero's sidekick, "Stretch" Skinner. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $1,225; VF/NM 9.0 value = $1,938. CGC census 2/06: 1 in 8.5, none higher.

Here's yet another "highest-graded" copy in this amazing
Batman
run, this one's tied with a couple of other NM- gems as the nicest specimens of #21. Inside the issue, Batman and Robin meet the Penguin and get some help on a case from Alfred (which, as usual, means they end up saving their butler's bacon). Dick Sprang saw to the cover and interior art. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $2,075. CGC census 3/06: 3 in 9.2, none higher.

New York World's Fair Comics 1940 (DC, 1940) CGC FN- 5.5 Off-white pages.
After the ill-fated attempt to charge a whopping 25 cents for the 1939 World's Fair comic, DC came back the next year with this more affordable 15-center. The dime and the nickel were well spent, as this book is now ranked among the 100 most valuable Golden Age comic books! This issue's cover marks the first time Superman, Batman, and Robin all appeared together in one scene. In fact, according to Jack Burnley who drew the trio, this is the first time those characters were ever drawn by somebody other than their creators! It's also the first published comic book work by Burnley. Superman and Batman appeared in separate stories inside the issue. Also appearing were the Sandman, Johnny Thunder, the Hourman, Slam Bradley, and others. Overstreet 2006 FN 6.0 value = $3,384. CGC census 2/06: 3 in 5.5, 9 higher.

Batman #47 (DC, 1948) CGC FN+ 6.5 Off-white pages.
The first detailed telling of Batman's origin is what makes this a sought-after issue -- in fact, it's the most valuable issue of this long series except for the first dozen or so. And following that retelling is a memorable story that has Batman tracking down Joe Chill, the man who killed Bruce Wayne's parents. And there's even a Catwoman story elsewhere in the issue. Bob Kane is credited with the cover, and Kane and Jerry Robinson teamed up on the interior art. Overstreet 2006 FN 6.0 value = $1,491; VF 8.0 value = $3,479. CGC census 3/06: 7 in 7.0, 19 higher.

World's Finest Comics #9 (DC, 1943) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages.
Here's one of the highlights of this high-grade run, it's the sole highest-graded copy as of this writing. Hitler, Tojo, and Mussolini are featured on this Jack Burnley cover. A Boy Commandos story with Simon and Kirby art is the standout feature. While Batman and Superman appeared in separate stories in this and every issue, the Caped Crusader does put in a cameo in the Star-Spangled Kid story, as do Robin and the Joker! Alas, this was the last of the 100-page issues (if it's any consolation, they were all just 96-pagers anyway if you don't count the covers!). Note that a small plastic stabilizing peg is loose inside the CGC holder, not affecting the comic itself or the integrity of the holder. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $1,275; VF/NM 9.0 value = $2,013. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 8.5, none higher.

This third issue of the title is one of the ten most valuable crime comics according to Overstreet's ranking. The book, rated "scarce" by Overstreet and a "7" by Gerber, has the origin and first appearance of the host character Mr. Crime. While violent covers like this one by Charles Biro would become a common sight a few years later, this one's especially notable considering the 1942 issue date. Detective Comics #110 (DC, 1946) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
We were doubly pleased to spot this copy in Harold Curtis' collection -- not only is it tied for the highest grade CGC has assigned to date, it's got one of the more offbeat stories in the run, with Batman and Robin going to London along with English butler Alfred to face a villain named Moriarty! No doubt Win Mortimer's cover has our many U.K. bidders pondering an even more baffling mystery: why are the Houses of Parliament on a grass field, and who stole the Thames river? Mortimer handled interior art as well, and Curt Swan drew the Boy Commandos backup feature. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $985. CGC census 1/06: 2 in 9.4, none higher.

Silver Streak Comics #6 (Lev Gleason, 1940) CGC VG- 3.5 Off-white pages.
This book's one of Overstreet's 100 most valuable Golden Age comic books, owing mostly to an eight-pager with the origin and first appearance of the original Daredevil! It's easy to forget that the character's first appearance had him drawn neither by Charles Biro nor Jack Cole, but Jack Binder! The other reasons that this book commands a premium are the rarity of the issue (it's called "scarce" by both Overstreet and Gerber) and of course the superb cover by Cole. As crease-prone as the stiff covers of these square bound books could be, it's nice to see that one has survived in this condition. A 7.5 copy is quite impressive for this particular square bound book -- none has been graded higher than 8.5 as of this writing. This issue's got the first appearance of the Scarecrow, which is a much bigger deal than it used to be now that he scared the living heck out of America in the movie "Batman Begins." The villain's origin is also in this issue, in a story drawn by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. Also of note are the Sandman's debut in this series, and stories with Superman and Johnny Thunder. The CGC slab says "Jack Burnley cover," Overstreet says Fred Ray, and in this case we lend more credence to the latter.Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $2,139. CGC census 2/06: 2 in 7.5, 4 higher.

Detective Comics #62 (DC, 1942) CGC VF- 7.5 Off-white pages.
Is this the first "real" Joker cover? You could certainly make that argument, as the only previous comic book cover the Joker appeared on (
Detective
#40) has him barely recognizable, and with the wrong skin color, no less. This book's got the real thing -- we think you'll agree that this cover art by Jerry Robinson shows the quintessence of the Mephistopheles of Mirth himself. The story involves a nationwide competition for the funniest joke, to which the Joker isn't invited. He's mad at being left out, and no, he doesn't write a nasty letter, he starts murdering the contestants! Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $1,713. CGC census 2/06: 4 in 7.5, 1 higher.

All Star Comics #9 (DC, 1942) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages.
Only a few copies of this black-cover issue have been graded higher than our offering to date. In this issue, the "FBI chief" gives the Justice Society their mission, so we'll go ahead and call the story a J. Edgar Hoover appearance though he's never called by name. One name that
was
spoken was that of Hitler, his first mention in this title. The book has an E. E. Hibbard cover, with art by the likes of Hibbard, Sheldon Moldoff, Bernard Baily, and Jack Burnley. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $1,850. CGC census 2/06: 1 in 8.0, 3 higher.

Comic Cavalcade #3 (DC, 1943) CGC VF+ 8.5 White pages.
Here's a prime example of why we're so excited about the Harold Curtis collection -- this is the highest-graded copy of #3 that CGC has certified to date, and as difficult as these square bound DCs are to find in high grade, topping it will be a tall order! In addition to the title's stars Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Flash, this issue has the series debuts of All-American stalwarts Hop Harrigan, Sargon the Sorcerer, and the King (aka "King" Standish). Note that two small pieces of plastic are loose inside the CGC holder, not affecting the comic itself or the integrity of the holder. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $1,088; VF/NM 9.0 value = $1,719. CGC census 1/06: 1 in 8.5, none higher.

Crime Does Not Pay #33 (Lev Gleason, 1942) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages.
The most famous cover of this title's run makes this issue a standout, and while a few other copies have attained 9.0 status, none has topped that mark to date. This original-owner copy probably would have graded out higher if not for a wee bit of edge stress at the top; it has better centering than any other copy we've seen, as most copies tend to have the word "Publications" at the bottom cut off. The classic hanging cover is the work of Charles Biro. Overstreet 2006 VF/NM 9.0 value = $430; NM- 9.2 value = $585. CGC census 2/06: 4 in 9.0, none higher.

Sensation Comics #24 (DC, 1943) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages.
This is the nicest copy yet certified of this issue, in fact it's the only one to top the 8.5 mark! Wonder Woman gains a new power in this issue, namely the ability to control her invisible plane using only mental commands. H. G. Peter handled the cover and interior art, with Sheldon Moldoff (the Black Pirate) and Paul Reinman (Wildcat) adding backup features. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $1,050. Yikes, Jokers in every single state of the USA (all

of 'em, this being 1949). And worse, all of the Jokers are readying to launch a crime wave! That's the fiendish plan, and Batman's only hope is to infiltrate the group, posing as the New Jersey Joker... fuhgeddaboudit! The issue has a Dick Sprang cover, with interior art by Sprang, Bob Kane, and Charles Paris. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $669. CGC census 3/06: 6 in 8.0, 3 higher.

World's Finest Comics #18 (DC, 1945) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages.
Here's one of the (world's) finest known copies of this particular issue. Cover art chores fell to Jack Burnley, and he came through with a return to Robin's circus-performer roots (or was there some sort of "sidekick hazing" going on?). A Batman story by Dick Sprang is just one highlight of this 72-page issue. Overstreet 2006 VF/NM 9.0 value = $1,225; NM- 9.2 value = $1,675. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 9.0, 2 higher.

Big All-American Comic Book #1 (DC, 1944) CGC VG+ 4.5 Off-white pages.
No matter what you pay for this book, one thing holds true: no comic gives you more for your money! This 128-pager is the heaviest slab we've ever held in our comic-loving hands, and within these covers are appearances by every significant character from the stable of All-American Comics (which was essentially a sister company to DC). That means A-listers Flash, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern (and just about every other Justice Society member too), as well as Sheldon Mayer's Scribbly. Of special importance is the fact that the issue has Joe Kubert's first work on Hawkman. The book is on Overstreet's list of the 100 most valuable Golden Age comics. Overstreet 2006 VG 4.0 value = $1,854. CGC census 3/06: 1 in 4.5, 14 higher.

Comic Cavalcade #8 (DC, 1944) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages.
Only the Mile High copy has attained a higher grade than this one to date! Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the Flash star as usual. The neat-o football cover is another plus, though as you can see, Flash was no Sammy Baugh when it came to punting the football. Shanks anyway, Flash! Detective Comics #104 (DC, 1945) CGC NM- 9.2 White pages.
This original-owner copy is tied for the highest grade CGC has assigned to date, and we'll note that it's got better page quality than the very nice 9.2 Rockford copy! Dick Sprang drew both the cover and the accompanying story, in which Batman and Robin try to thwart some crooks who are using billboards as part of a blackmailing scheme. Backup features include Air Wave, Slam Bradley, and the Boy Commandos. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $985. CGC census 1/06: 2 in 9.2, none higher.

Police Comics #1 (Quality, 1941) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Off-white to white pages.
This issue is one of the bigger bargains in comics if you ask us. Yes, copies trade for four and even five figures, but compared to the first appearances of other major Golden Age characters, it's a steal! If you're joining us late, the character of whom we speak is Plastic Man, and we hasten to add that Phantom Lady made her first appearance here as well. Also note how high this VG/FN copy ranks on CGC's census, with only four unrestored copies topping it as of this writing. Overstreet 2006 VG 4.0 value = $1,454; FN 6.0 value = $2,181. CGC census 2/06: 4 in 5.0, 4 higher.
