All Star Comics #8 (DC, 1942) CGC VF- 7.5 Cream to off-white pages.
The cover scene by artist E. E. Hibbard is seared into most serious Golden Age comic collectors' brains; this is truly one of the most important issues ever, and for multiple reasons. Foremost are the origin and first appearance of Wonder Woman, prime reasons this issue ranks 22nd in Overstreet's listing of the Top Golden Age Books. Other features include Starman and Dr. Mid-Nite becoming members of the JSA, Dr. Fate donning a new costume, and appearances by Shiera and Hop Harrigan. At VF- 7.5, our copy compares favorably to the finest copy CGC has certified to date, which registers VF+ 8.5. This is the finest copy of issue #8 that we have ever offered. Interior art is by Jack Burnley, Sheldon Moldoff, Bernard Baily, and H. G. Peter. Overstreet 2005 VF 8.0 value = $21,600. CGC census 7/05: 2 in 7.5, 2 higher.

Overstreet currently lists this issue in 16th place on its ranking of the most valuable comic books. It's the first issue of Green Lantern's solo title, which the character earned after his successful debut in

. The origin of Alan Scott, the Golden Age bearer of the ring, is retold in this issue, which features a cover by Howard Purcell and interior art by GL's creator Martin Nodell. Overstreet 2005 FN 6.0 value = $8,925; VF 8.0 value = $23,800. CGC census 9/05: 5 in 7.0, 7 higher.

Green Lantern #2 (DC, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Cream to off-white pages.
It's the first book-length Green Lantern story! The hero's all smiles on the Martin Nodell cover, and why not -- pal Doiby Dickles is wielding a mean monkey wrench. The interior art is also by Nodell, GL's creator. Overstreet 2005 VF/NM 9.0 value = $7,620; NM- 9.2 value = $10,500. CGC census 9/05: 1 in 9.0, none higher.

Haunt of Fear #17 (#3) Gaines File pedigree (EC, 1950) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages.
No copy of this issue has been graded higher to date than our offering from the files of Bill Gaines! Speaking of Mr. Gaines, he makes an appearance in one of the stories along with Al Feldstein -- we find out the origins of the
Crypt of Terror
, the
Vault of Horror
, and the
Haunt of Fear
, namely that the GhouLunatic narrators of those three comics captured Gaines and Feldstein and forced them to sign contracts to publish horror stories! Meanwhile, a character who happens to be named "John Severin" appears in the story "Nightmare, A Psychological Study," a tale taken to task in
Seduction Of The Innocent
because it "shows the same predilection for non-language expletives familiar in other comics." While we ponder what exactly that means, we'll mention that the issue has a Johnny Craig cover, with interior art by Craig, Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, and Graham Ingels. Note that while CGC has certified this comic as a Gaines File Copy, no certificate accompanies this lot. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $1,700. CGC census 9/05: 2 in 9.6, none higher.

Batman #11 (DC, 1942) CGC VF+ 8.5 Cream to off-white pages.
The fact that the original art for this Fred Ray-Jerry Robinson cover recently sold at auction for a record price is evidence of how strongly collectors feel about this great image. The interior of the issue is equally memorable -- it's got appearances by both the Joker and the Penguin. Overstreet 2005 VF 8.0 value = $4,739; VF/NM 9.0 value = $7,620. The Amazing Spider-Man #1-20 Bound Volume (Marvel, 1963-65).
These might be the best comic books ever produced, and there is
no
better way to enjoy them than by acquiring this bound volume. After all, even if you own every issue, your copies are either sealed up in slabs, or at the very least you have to handle them with kid gloves. And while we won't knock the
Marvel Masterworks
, those reprint books can't begin to compete with experiencing the original colors, Stan Lee's Bullpen Bulletins, the letters pages, and everything else that went into these classics. Trimmed and bound copies of issues #1-20 are contained in this handsome volume.
Note that #1 is the 1966 Golden Records reprint, but all of the other comics are the originals.
Most of the comics were evidently mid-grade copies when bound, but a chunk missing from the cover of #4 is the only serious defect of note. Some of the issues (including #2!) are
super
-nice, and the page quality will equal or beat any copies you would find "in the wild." The spine of the volume is embossed with the title and issue numbers, and the previous owner's name is embossed on the front of the book. So do you think you might like to have the first appearances of the Vulture, Doctor Octopus, the Sandman, Betty Brant, Liz Allen, the Lizard, Electro, Mysterio, the Green Goblin, Kraven the Hunter, Ned Leeds, and the Scorpion, all drawn by Steve Ditko?! We believe any comic fan with a pulse will answer that question with a resounding yes. Overstreet 2005 VG 4.0 value for group = $4,402.

Vault of Horror #16 Gaines File pedigree (EC, 1950) CGC NM/MT 9.8 Off-white to white pages.
If perfection is your goal as a collector, look no further than this magnificent file copy. The mostly black background fields on this incredible copy are flawless, the spine is unblemished, and the edges and corners appear razor-sharp. Johnny Craig's art adorns the spooky cover, while Graham Ingels, Jack Kamen, Craig, and Al Feldstein handle the interior art. While CGC recognizes this as a Gaines File copy, no certificate is included. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $825. CGC census 8/05: 1 in 9.8, none higher.

Playboy #1 (HMH Publishing, 1953) Condition: FN.
This issue started a multimedia phenomenon and made Hugh Hefner a household name. It's the very first
Playboy
magazine, which caused a splash by featuring some 1949 nude photos of Marilyn Monroe, but also held readers' interest thanks to a canny mix of features, including jokes, cartoons, and pictorials, but also a piece by Ambrose Bierce, a Sherlock Holmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle, a jazz article, and an article commending college football's return to the one-platoon system. The mag's introductory text says, "If we are able to give the American male a few extra laughs and a little diversion from the anxieties of the Atomic Age, we feel we've justified our existence." This is an attractive copy, with a three-inch crease on the back cover standing as the only negative. It's one of the better specimens we've seen of an issue that's not easy to find in any condition!

Mystic Comics #6 (Timely, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Cream to off-white pages.
There hasn't been a better copy of this issue certified by CGC as of this writing! This issue has the origin and first appearance of the Destroyer, who was the only one of the top Timely characters created by Stan Lee -- he's been called Lee's most significant superhero creation prior to the Fantastic Four. Overstreet gives the cover the eyebrow-raising credit "Kirby/Schomburg"... if this is really a collaboration between those two, it's remarkable indeed. Overstreet 2005 VF/NM 9.0 value = $3,982; NM- 9.2 value = $5,500. CGC census 9/05: 2 in 9.0, none higher.

Fantastic Four #1-20 and Annual #1 Bound Volume (Marvel, 1961-63).
The first appearance of the Fantastic Four leads off this bound volume, but you also get the first appearances of the Skrulls, Dr. Doom, Alicia Masters, the Impossible Man, the Watcher, the Super Skrull, and more, plus the first Silver Age appearance of the Sub-Mariner! And to top it off, Stan Lee signed this book on the blank page across from the cover of #1. In all, trimmed and bound copies of issues #1-20 and Annual #1 are included here. The condition of the comics varies a bit, but the odd cover crease is the only defect of note (none of the comics was in less than VG condition when bound, and many are nicer than that). Try putting together 21 individual copies this nice -- it would be an expensive venture indeed! The spine of the book is embossed with the title and issue numbers, and the previous owner's name is embossed on the front of the book. Overstreet 2005 VG 4.0 value for group = $6,528.

Amazing Adventures, Amazing Adult Fantasy, and Amazing Fantasy #1-15 Bound Volume (Atlas/Marvel, 1961-62).
When the first appearance of Spider-Man is only
one
of the highlights, you know you've got a special bound volume in your hands! Yes,
Amazing Fantasy
#15 is one of the comics in this handsome volume, which contains trimmed and bound copies of issues #1-15 (the series began as
Amazing Adventures
, becoming
Amazing Adult Fantasy
with #7, and of course #15 was the only issue to be called
Amazing Fantasy
). No doubt you already know all about the contents of #15, which is also described elsewhere in this catalog, but how about tons of Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko stories, many of which have never been reprinted anywhere (and the ones that did appear in reprints were usually cut down or altered)? In fact, looking through this treasure trove, we didn't see one single story that wasn't drawn by either Kirby or Ditko, and there are some classics in here like Kirby's "Sserpo, The Creature Who Crushed The Earth" and Ditko's "The Terror of Tim Boo Ba." The early issues combine monster yarns with tales of Dr. Droom, whom Overstreet calls the first Marvel Age superhero, making his first appearance in #1 a key issue in its own right. Also of note is a Ditko-drawn tale in #14 which is a prototype of the whole X-Men concept, with mutants who have special powers being hated and feared by their fellow man. These comics are fairly well-thumbed copies which evidently averaged approximately VG condition when bound, however it's amazing what preservation in a bound volume does for the page quality of a comic! The spine of the book is embossed with the title and issue numbers, and the previous owner's name is embossed on the front of the book. We will accept only one excuse for not bidding on this bound volume, and that's the highly unlikely event that you already own all of these issues. Anyone else who passes this by might as well turn in his M.M.M.S

Stunning cover colors on this copy, which is close to the finest specimen CGC has certified yet for #11. Her feature also begins in this issue, which also has appearances by Shiera and the Spectre. Interior artists include Jack Burnley, H. G. Peter, and Howard Sherman. The Incredible Hulk #1-6 and Tales To Astonish #26-40 Bound Volume (Marvel, 1962-64).
This great-looking hardcover would be worth spending a pretty penny on just to get the first six
Hulk
issues alone, especially since #1 (the character's origin and first appearance) is autographed by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and even Dazzlin' Dick Ayers! But you also get the first appearance of Ant-Man in
TTA
#27, lots of other early Ant-Man stories, and lots of "mystery" tales with art by Kirby or Steve Ditko, some of which have never been reprinted! Note that the copies of
Tales To Astonish
#39 and 40 included here are the British editions (which are not reprints, but editions released at approximately the same time as the US versions); all other comics in this group are the original Marvel editions. The condition of these trimmed and bound copies varies a bit, but the only serious defects of note are handwriting on the front and back covers of
TTA
#27 and a one-inch tear through the last few pages of #26. The spine of the book is embossed with the title and issue numbers (mentioning only
Tales to Astonish
), and the previous owner's name is embossed on the front of the book. Overstreet 2005 VG 4.0 value for group = $4,774.

Batman #7 (DC, 1941) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white pages.
The early issues of the title were characterized by some of the most dynamic covers in the entire run. This one's by Bob Kane, who also provided interior art, along with Jerry Robinson and George Roussos. The Joker makes his fourth appearance in seven issues. This is about as nice a copy as you'll find. Although a few copies rank ahead of our offering in CGC's current census, the highest grade yet assigned is a not-much-better VF/NM 9.0. Classics Illustrated #1-169 Bound Volumes (Gilberton, 1943-69).
This incredible group of ten bound volumes brings together issues #1-169 of the
Classics Illustrated
series -- that's the title's full run! Also included are fifteen
Classics Illustrated Special Issues
, all giants. Most of the regular issues are not first printings -- approximately 50% range from HRN 161-169, but there are also quite a few in the 89-155 range, and a handful even earlier than this. Among the most notable gems are a HRN 15 copy of #14 and the Original Edition of #43. Each massive volume is attractively bound in a dark green leather-style cover, with titles stamped on the spine in gold. The name of the former owner is also stamped in gold on the front cover. All issues (most appearing in FN or better condition) have been trimmed in the binding process. Overstreet VG 4.0 value for group = $2,007. (Total: 10 items)

Haunt of Fear #15 (#1) (EC, 1950) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages.
This is the first issue of one of EC's famous horror titles, and it has the first story Harvey Kurtzman produced for EC (though not the first to make it into print). Johnny Craig's cover gave way to exquisite drawings by himself, Harvey Kurtzman, Al Feldstein, and the team of Harry Harrison and Wally Wood. Note that Overstreet lists the following issue as the first appearance of the Old Witch; while that does look like her on this issue's cover, some have speculated that that's her fellow GhouLunatic, the Vault Keeper. This is one of the hardest copies for Fan-Addicts to scare up -- it's rated "scarce" by Overstreet. Overstreet 2005 VF/NM 9.0 value = $3,035; NM- 9.2 value = $4,000. Vampirella, who had served as host of this title's horror tales, made her debut as a serious character in this issue, along with the first appearances of long-running characters Conrad and Adam Van Helsing, plus the Cult of Chaos. Another first here was Archie Goodwin's debut as writer -- Goodwin's writing and editing would make quite an impact on the Warren line. The mag has a Ken Kelly cover, with interior art by Tom Sutton, Jack Sparling, George Roussos, Frank Frazetta (one page), and "Tony Williamsune" (Tony Tallarico and Bill Fraccio). This frantic cover is not only a bondage scene, it features the villainy of Hitler himself -- luckily the Nazi gets a well-deserved knock on the noggin courtesy of the Destroyer. This cover, drawn by Al Gabriele, is also notable for being one of very few Timely covers to have word balloons. The interior artists include Mike Sekowsky, who drew the Challenger story. Batman #9 (DC, 1942) CGC VF 8.0 Cream to off-white pages.
One of the best-known Batman covers of all is this one here by Jack Burnley! This issue also has the very first Batman Christmas story. The interior artists include Jerry Robinson and George Roussos. Overstreet 2005 VF 8.0 value = $2,243. CGC census 7/05: 6 in 8.0, 4 higher.

The Amazing Spider-Man #21-40 Bound Volume (Marvel, 1965-66).
Lots of Green Goblin tales are a highlight of this bound volume, which includes copies of issues #21-40 -- that's the second half of the acclaimed Steve Ditko run and the first two issues of John Romita Sr.'s tenure as Spidey's artist. Note that these copies were not trimmed prior to binding, so they could conceivably be removed if a future owner sees fit to do so. The spine of the book is embossed with the title and issue numbers, and the previous owner's name is embossed on the front of the book. Overstreet 2005 VG 4.0 value for group = $1,268.

Top heroes Human Torch, Captain America, and Sub-Mariner are joined by newcomers the Destroyer (from the pages of

The impressive lineup of interior artists is headlined by Simon and Kirby (drawing their creation Captain America), Paul Reinman, and Carl Burgos, as well as Binder, whose Destroyer story has appearances by Hitler and fellow nefarious Nazi Rudolf Hess. Green Lantern #8 (DC, 1943) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages.
This Overstreet designated "classic" cover was created by Howard Purcell and Sheldon Mayer. Most issues of this title are elusive in high grade, and this beauty boasts the highest grade that CGC has awarded to date. Martin Nodell and Jon Blummer provided story art in this issue. Overstreet 2005 VF/NM 9.0 value = $2,222; NM- 9.2 value = $3,000. CGC census 7/05: 2 in 9.0, none higher.

Batman #3 (DC, 1940) CGC FN 6.0 Cream to off-white pages.
Wonderful cover is deemed a "classic" by Overstreet, who attributes the art to Bob Kane and Sheldon Moldoff. CGC suggests Jerry Robinson is Kane's inker, and that the pair also did the interior art for this issue. The third appearance of Catwoman finds her in costume for the first time, and that makes her comic's first costumed villainess. Another first is the appearance of Puppet Master. Overstreet 2005 FN 6.0 value = $2,517. CGC census 7/05: 2 in 6.0, 20 higher.

The Brave and the Bold #11-30 Bound Volume (DC, 1957-60).
The first appearance of the Justice League of America in #28 is the unquestioned highlight of this bound volume. Also in these pages are the second and third appearances of the group. But there's also the first appearance of the Suicide Squad as well as lots of Viking Prince stories with Joe Kubert art. In all, trimmed and bound copies of issues #11-30 are included here. The spine of the book is embossed with the title and issue numbers, and the previous owner's name is embossed on the front of the book. Aside from the occasional cover crease and a wee bit of edge chipping, the comics are in very nice condition; the page quality ranges from good to outstanding! Overstreet 2005 VG 4.0 value for group = $2,672.

Detective Comics #120 (DC, 1947) CGC VF+ 8.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Overstreet says that this issue is "rare above fine" because of its white cover; well, here's a
VF+
copy just for you! It's no wonder most surviving copies have been sullied by multiple reads: in addition to the cover story with a Penguin appearance drawn by Win Mortimer (who also drew the cover), there's a Boy Commandos story with Curt Swan art as well as John Daly's rendition of the gumshoe who had been solving crimes since

Weird Science-Fantasy #25 Gaines File pedigree (EC, 1954) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
Al Williamson scores a direct hit with this wild "Lost World cover, complete with a hungry dinosaur ready to pounce on the hapless humans who wandered in. This issue gets a jump-start on #26's "Flying Saucer Report" with one story. Williamson (doing a Ray Bradbury adaptation), Wally Wood, Marie Severin, Bernard Krigstein, and Joe Orlando are featured artists. Although CGC recognizes this as a Gaines file copy, no certificate accompanies this book. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $520. CGC census 9/05: 1 in 9.4, 1 higher.

Super Comics #1-12 File Copies Bound Volume (Dell, 1938-39).
One of Western Publishing's first comic book titles was
Super Comics
. This title even pre-dates the "Dell" company logo, and features reprinted newspaper strips such as
Dick Tracy
,
Terry and the Pirates
,
The Gumps
,
Little Orphan Annie
,
Gasoline Alley
,
Smilin' Jack
,
Moon Mullins
, and more. This is one of the oldest bound volumes to come out of the Random House Archives; like others from that collection, it consists of file copies that were bound and trimmed into a hardback volume, designed for office reference use. This book has a few rough spots on the binding: there's a chunk missing from the spine of the book, and the back hinge is showing signs of beginning to come loose. But the comics inside still look pretty fresh, with colorful, matt-finish covers and supple pages. On the inside front cover is written "Property of Robert S. Callender", the former manager of Western Printing. A very historic volume! Overstreet 2005 VG 4.0 value for group = $2,074.

Green Lantern #4 (DC, 1942) CGC VF- 7.5 Cream to off-white pages.

So it's no surprise that Green Lantern joins the Army in this issue (with Doiby Dickles by his side as ever). The book has an Irwin Hasen cover and Martin Nodell interior art. Overstreet 2005 VF 8.0 value = $2,600. CGC census 9/05: 1 in 7.5, 2 higher.

World's Finest Comics #3 (DC, 1941) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white pages.
Now that the Scarecrow has hit the big screen in the movie "Batman Begins," no Bat-Collector has an excuse not to have the baddie's first appearance. It's right here in this issue, as is the villain's origin. Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson drew the Batman tale. Other characters in this whopping square bound mag include the Sandman (his first outing in this series), Superman, and Johnny Thunder. While the CGC slab says "Jack Burnley cover," that's Fred Ray art if we've ever seen it, and Overstreet has our backs on that point. Only two specimens of the issue have been graded higher as of this writing, and they're both just half a grade higher at 8.5. Overstreet 2005 VF 8.0 value = $2,126. CGC census 7/05: 2 in 8.0, 2 higher.
