Flash Comics #3 (DC, 1940) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
"King" Standish made his first appearance in this issue -- the master of disguise would be a regular in the series for several years to come. According to Overstreet, issue #3 also marked the first time that longtime Flash artist E. E. Hibbard drew the titular Scarlet Speedster. Meanwhile, Sheldon Moldoff drew the cover and an interior story, both featuring Cliff Cornwall. Other backup features include the blundering Johnny Thunder, drawn as usual by Stan Aschmeier. A NM- copy from DC's Golden Age is quite a find, and in fact this is the only unrestored copy that CGC has certified to date. Overstreet 2004 NM- 9.2 value = $7,300.

All-American Comics #17 (DC, 1940) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages.
DC icon Green Lantern made his second-ever appearance in this issue! And the book is just as "scarce" as the character's first appearance in #16 according to Gerber, who gave both books his "7" rating. Overstreet ranks this issue among the 100 most valuable Golden Age books. GL is drawn by Sheldon Moldoff on the cover; inside the comic the character is rendered by his creator, Martin Nodell. The backup features include Mutt and Jeff, Red, White and Blue, and Sheldon Mayer's Scribbly. This is the highest-graded copy of the issue, and the only one graded above FN/VF, that CGC has certified to date. Overstreet 2004 VF 8.0 value = $9,608; VF/NM 9.0 value = $15,054.

More Fun Comics #57 Nova Scotia pedigree (DC, 1940) NM 9.4 Off-white pages.
Bernard Baily's eerie cover art shows the Spectre towering over a couple of thugs. And this sterling specimen towers over all comers, earning CGC's highest grade awarded to date for this issue. Its cover gloss shimmers brightly, its corners are sharp, and its spine is rigidly taut. Interior stories include Doctor Fate and Congo Bill. Overstreet 2004 NM- 9.2 value = $4,800.

All Star Comics #33 (DC, 1947) CGC NM 9.4 Cream to off-white pages.
Who
doesn't
remember Solomon Grundy? The frightening brute from Slaughter Swamp menaced Green Lantern in the 40s, the Super Friends on TV in the 70s, and Infinity Inc. in the 80s, and he's still going strong today. So it's surprising that he disappeared for quite a while -- this was the last appearance of the Golden Age for the villain. He gives the Justice Society all they can handle here, in a book-length feature with different artists drawing different chapters (an
All-Star
tradition). Joe Kubert is the most notable artist, and we should also note that Green Lantern's streetwise pal Doiby Dickles guest stars. With the exception of the JSA's first few appearances, this is the most sought-after issue of the title's run, and you just won't find a better copy -- this is the highest-graded copy of the issue that CGC has certified to date. Overstreet 2004 NM- 9.2 value = $4,500.

Captain America Comics #1 (Timely, 1941) CGC Apparent VF/NM 9.0 Moderate (P) Cream to off-white pages.
Captain America is one of the most beloved characters of all, that's why this comic, his origin and first appearance, is one of the most treasured of all. There was certainly plenty of evil afoot in '41, and the fiend behind most of it, one Adolf Hitler, gets a well deserved punch in the face on one of the most famous comic book covers ever. Two other pretty important characters made their debuts in the issue: the evil Red Skull, who would menace Cap for the remainder of the century, and Cap's loyal sidekick Bucky Barnes. Creative geniuses Joe Simon and Jack Kirby drew the origin story, while the cover is a solo effort by Kirby. We've had the good fortune to see a few copies of this comic here at Heritage, and most have been well-thumbed after many re-readings, so this clean-looking, professionally restored copy is a sight for sore eyes. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cleaned, reinforced, staples cleaned. (Married centerfold)." Overstreet 2004 GD 2.0 value = $6,944; VG 4.0 value = $13,888; FN 6.0 value = $20,832; VF 8.0 value = $49,200; VF/NM 9.0 value = $87,100.

Flash Comics #58 Mile High pedigree (DC, 1944) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages.
While Flash plumbs the new depths on the cover, this copy's grade scales new heights! A 9.8 is the highest grade for a Golden Age book among tens of thousands we've offered here at Heritage. Wouldn't you know it, it's from Edgar Church's Mile High collection. The book has a cover by Martin Naydel. Features include the Flash, the Ghost Patrol, Johnny Thunder, and Hawkman (the last has Sheldon Moldoff art). This is not only the highest-graded copy of the issue that CGC has certified to date, it's the only one with a grade above 7.0. Overstreet 2004 NM- 9.2 value = $1,060.

Detective Comics #31 (DC, 1939) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Cream to off-white pages.
The term "classic cover" gets bandied about quite a bit, but nobody disputes that designation for this all-time great image. It's a cover which has been paid homage to by many subsequent Bat-artists over the years, but none have matched the ominous mood set here by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. The intense interest in this cover is also the primary reason that this book is listed among the top 20 most valuable comic books by Overstreet. But don't discount the story, which has a few major firsts: the Batplane appears for the first time, as does the Batarang. It also features Bruce Wayne's first girlfriend (that we
know
about, he is a handsome millionaire after all), one Julie Madison. As this was a very early Batman appearance, the Bat-story is backed up by a plethora of other crimefighting features, the most notable of which is Slam Bradley by Superman's creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Only three copies of this issue have been certified with higher grades by CGC to date. Overstreet 2004 VG 4.0 value = $5,636; FN 6.0 value = $8,445.

Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) CGC FN 6.0 Off-white to white pages.
This is the most valuable comic book of the Silver Age according to Overstreet, and no wonder: it has the origin and first appearance of Spider-Man. And the character isn't just a comic book phenomenon anymore -- thanks to the character's movie breakthrough, even your wife, kids, and grandma know the origin story told here. This book is to the Silver Age what
Action Comics
#1 is to the Golden Age, and the jump in popularity thanks to the movies means this book is a better investment than ever. The classic tale, which also has the first appearance of Aunt May and Uncle Ben, is by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, with a cover by Jack Kirby. 2004 FN 6.0 value = $3,900.

The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC VF- 7.5 Cream to off-white pages.
Marvel's most famous and enduring character debuted in his own title and made only his second appearance overall here. This book is ranked as the fourth most-valuable Silver Age book by Overstreet, topped only by the first appearances of the Fantastic Four, the Silver Age Flash, and Spidey himself. The cover is billed as a team effort between Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby -- it would appear that Jolly Jack did the layouts, and Sturdy Steve took care of the rest. The Fantastic Four don't suspect Spidey's "real power," so
Amazing Fantasy

Did you think the Green Goblin's "hot" period was over? Well, no doubt you just changed your mind after watching "Spider-Man 2", which told us in no uncertain terms that Gobby will be featured in the third installment. All of this means that demand for the villain's first appearance is on the ascent once again. This issue is also notable for including the first meeting between the Hulk and Spider-Man. The cover and interior art are by Steve Ditko. Overstreet 2004 NM- 9.2 value = $3,300.

Action Comics #6 (DC, 1938) CGC FN 6.0 Cream to off-white pages.
To put it mildly, this comic has plenty to recommend it. It's one of the earliest Superman adventures, and as stated elsewhere in this catalog, the owners of these books seldom part with them. It also has the first appearance of one of DC's most recognizable characters, Jimmy Olsen. And before you dub Jimmy a supporting player, remember that
Superman's Pal
later starred in his own comic that ran for twenty years! Neither Jimmy (who's called "office boy" here) nor Superman made the cover, but Leo O'Mealia's absolutely superb cover illustration more than makes up for that. In fact, we regret that O'Mealia, who was best known as a sports cartoonist, wasn't much more prolific in the comic book field. We'd be remiss if we didn't note that this may be DC's first ever gorilla cover -- a theme the publisher would return to over and over in later decades, to the delight of many fans including us. Last but definitely not least, this is one of the nicest copies around, with only two unrestored copies earning higher grades from CGC to date. Overstreet 2004 FN 6.0 value = $4,038.

Action Comics #5 (DC, 1938) CGC FN 6.0 Light tan to off-white pages.
Not to take anything away from
Action
#1, but some of the other early issues of the title are even tougher to find! Witness this issue, which is a Gerber "8" (meaning "Rare", compare that to a "7" for issue #1). It's the first copy we've ever seen here at Heritage. Superman stars in the lead story (by his creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster), but didn't make the cover -- that went to an exciting adventure illustration by Leo O'Mealia. Other artists include Fred Guardineer, Bernard Baily, Sven Elven, and Paul Gustavson. Only two copies of the issue have been graded higher by CGC as of this writing. We know from experience that it's one thing to acquire a Gerber "8" if it's one of the more oddball books, and quite another if it's a high-demand mainstream title. We suggest you don't expect another one to come along soon. Overstreet 2004 FN 6.0 value = $4,038.

Flash Comics #26 (DC, 1942) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
An early-40s comic in this condition is a wonderful sight to see, and a fine showcase for E. E. Hibbard's cover image. Batman #62 Palo Alto pedigree (DC, 1950) CGC NM- 9.2 White pages.
With the Catwoman movie hitting theaters just days before this auction, demand for the character's appearances is very much on the ascent. This is one of the key issues for Ms. Kyle, as not only is her origin story told in the issue, she's also featured on the cover. It's fascinating to see how the character's look has evolved -- back in '50, hemlines were low, and that included villainesses! The cover is by Win Mortimer; the interior artists include Dick Sprang. This is the highest-graded copy that CGC has certified to date. A certificate of authenticity for the Palo Alto collection is included with this lot. Here's a comic that'll be very tough to pass up. For one thing, it's got a great Fred Ray cover, with Superman teaching Hitler and Hirohito a lesson. If you've always wanted to own one of the Holy Grails of comics, this professionally restored book could be your ticket to a spectacular bargain. Though its grade was adversely affected by holes on interior pages, based on outward eye appeal this specimen compares favorably with higher-graded copies we have offered in the past -- we encourage you to take a close look at our cover scan! It's a book of great historical significance, with the origin and first appearance of Captain America and Bucky, plus the first appearance of the Red Skull, all written and drawn by Simon and Kirby. Casper the Friendly Ghost #1 (St. John, 1949) CGC VF- 7.5 Off-white to white pages.
Here's a milestone for you: the first-ever comic book appearance of Casper! Yes, ghost fans, the character started out in this St. John book before many decades at Harvey. What's more, this was the first time the character was called Casper in any medium (he was a nameless "Friendly Ghost" in his early cartoon appearances). And if even that's not enough historical significance for you, this issue has Baby Huey's first appearance and origin as well. Wait, we're not even done yet: there's also the first appearance of Herman the Mouse (of later Herman and Katnip fame). It appears that only a bit of wear among the bottom edge prevented this copy from being graded higher, as it's a very attractive book with sharp corners, nice colors and great page quality. Only one copy of this issue has been certified with a higher grade by CGC to date, and that one was just one notch higher at VF. Overstreet 2004 VF 8.0 value = $1,150.

The Lizard made his first appearance in this issue. You'll recall that the scaly baddie is actually good-guy scientist Curt Connors, which means Spider-Man doesn't want to harm him. Problem is, the Lizard has no qualms about tearing Spidey limb from limb! It's Stan Lee conflict at its best, illustrated by Steve Ditko. By the way, no doubt you saw Dr. Connors get a speaking part in the "Spider-Man 2" movie, it was obvious that the groundwork was being laid for a Lizard appearance in one of the upcoming flicks. That makes this issue a good investment in our book. Overstreet 2004 VF/NM 9.0 value = $2,004; NM- 9.2 value = $2,700.

Flash Comics #72 (DC, 1946) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
Flash doesn't look particularly honored to be immortalized on a bust... maybe because sculptors Winky, Blinky, and Noddy are bound to botch the job somehow. A much better monument to the speedster's greatness is this comic book, which has certainly survived the ages in fine shape. Inside the comic are a Hawkman story, by Joe Kubert no less, as well as tales starring Johnny Thunder and the Ghost Patrol. The issue's cover is by E. E. Hibbard. This is the highest grade that CGC has assigned for this issue to date. Overstreet 2004 NM- 9.2 value = $950.

Flash Comics #73 (DC, 1946) CGC NM 9.4 Cream to off-white pages.

Other features in the book include Flash, Ghost Patrol, and Johnny Thunder. This is the highest-graded copy of the issue, and the only one above 8.0, that CGC has certified to date. Overstreet 2004 NM- 9.2 value = $950.

Flash Comics #82 (DC, 1947) CGC NM 9.4 White pages.
The Flash tale in this issue was drawn by E. E. Hibbard, who had a long run on the character. The cover is also by Hibbard; other artists in the issue include Stan Josephs and Chet Kozlak. The cover colors look great, from the Flash on the front to Red Ryder hawking air rifles in the back. This is the highest-graded copy of this issue that CGC has certified to date. Overstreet 2004 NM- 9.2 value = $950.

The Amazing Spider-Man #50 (Marvel, 1967) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages.
This comic took on a new relevance this summer with the release of "Spider-Man 2" -- many of the movie's plot elements were first seen in this issue, including Peter Parker throwing his costume into a trashcan. But this is a key comic for another reason as well, as the Kingpin makes his first appearance! Of course, that overweight overlord has made it to movie screens too, albeit battling Daredevil rather than Spidey. The Kingpin's debut alome makes this the most important issue of John Romita Sr.'s run as artist, and a must for the serious Spider-Fan. Overstreet 2004 NM- 9.2 value = $900.

Sub-Mariner Comics #11 Pennsylvania pedigree (Timely, 1943) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
"Classic Schomburg cover," says Overstreet, and there'll be no argument from us: note the damsel in distress, the dragon, the imminent threat of a spear to the keister area, etc. Inside the comic, Subby is joined by his fellow Timely stalwart, the Angel. This is easily the nicest copy of the issue that CGC has certified, with the runner-up a full grade behind at 7.5. CGC notes, "Very minor amount of glue on cover." Overstreet 2004 VF 8.0 value = $1,400; VF/NM 9.0 value = $2,100.

Mad #1-23 Group (EC, 1952-55).
Attention satire lovers, EC fan-addicts, veeblefetzer enthusiasts, Superdupermen, Neumans, and Melvins! Here's the full run of the comic book version of
Mad
(which converted to magazine format starting with issue 24). Not interested? Yeah, right! You'd have to be pretty darn fershlugginer not to like Harvey Kurtzman's stories, with art by the likes of Jack Davis, Bill Elder, Basil Wolverton, and John Severin. Then there are the famous covers like Basil Wolverton's beauty-challenged "Lena" (#11), the fake racing form (#19), and the fake composition book (#20).
Mad
collectors know that you can always find the magazines if you look hard enough, but the comics are harder to come by, since people who have them never seem to want to part with them. So whatever you do, don't pass up this opportunity to acquire the whole set. Grades are as follows: #1 is FN, #2-12 are all VG+ to FN- (except #6 (GD) and #10 (FN)), #13-22 are all VG or VG- (except 16 (GD+), 18 (GD/VG), and 20 (FN), and #23 is GD. Overstreet 2004 value for group = $4,365. (Total: 23 Comic Books)

Ride a rocket ship to Venus with the EC crew: artists Al Feldstein ("Spawn of Venus"), Harvey Kurtzman ("Man and Superman"), Wally Wood ("Sinking of the Titanic"), and Jack Kamen (who turns in the wild "good girl" story, "Divide and Conquer"). Great comic stories, all wrapped up in a beautiful NM- package from the Gaines files! While CGC has certified this book as a Gaines File copy, no certificate accompanies this lot. Overstreet 2004 NM- 9.2 value = $660.

America's Best Comics #10 Mile High pedigree (Nedor Publications, 1944) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
You just can't beat Alex Schomburg's powerful cover image, and you can't enjoy it any more than on the Mile High copy! The cover is a real sign of the times that produced it -- it's quite a shock to see Doc Strange carrying the Russian flag and Pyroman bearing the Chinese banner (used by Taiwan these days). For that matter, you don't expect to see a hero named American Eagle lugging the Union Jack... obviously Allied solidarity was paramount in 1944. The NM- gem we're offering is one of only two copies of the book that CGC has certified as of this writing, so we feel safe in calling this specimen America's best. Overstreet 2004 NM- 9.2 value = $620.

The Amazing Spider-Man #4 (Marvel, 1963) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages.
The Sandman made his first appearance in this issue; the villain you couldn't land a punch on would return to menace Spidey many a time in subsequent years. His origin story reveals how he got so sandy in the first place. Also debuting were a couple of Peter Parker's love interests: secretary Betty Brant, who pined for puny Parker, and Midtown High cutie Liz Allen (sometimes Allan), who began as Flash Thompson's arm candy but soon flashed an independent streak. Which artist could handle this mix of crimefighting action and soap opera? Steve Ditko, natch. Overstreet 2004 VF 8.0 value = $1,654; VF/NM 9.0 value = $2,577.

Mike Sekowsky and Murphy Anderson drew the funhouse cover; the interior art is by Sekowsky. This is the highest-graded copy of the issue that CGC has certified to date. All Winners Comics #1 (Timely, 1941) CGC Apparent FN- 5.5 Off-white pages.
Everyone who was anyone at Timely turned out for this book, hence the title! The Angel, the Human Torch, Captain America, the Sub-Mariner, Black Marvel are here. They star in separate features, but a text story by youngster Stan Lee has the first appearance of the All-Winners Squad, who wouldn't make a panel appearance until #19. So there are winners aplenty on hand, and the guys drawing them weren't exactly a bunch of nobodies: Simon and Kirby are here, and so are Carl Burgos, Bill Everett, and cover artist Alex Schomburg. With so many points of collector interest, it's no wonder the issue is listed among the 40 most valuable Golden Age books by Overstreet. The comic may be
All Winners
, but the auction will have but one winner, so do your best to be the one taking this key book home. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: small amount of glue on spine of cover." Overstreet 2004 GD 2.0 value = $1,875; VG 4.0 value = $3,750; FN 6.0 value = $5,625.

Detective Comics #33 (DC, 1939) CGC Apparent FN 6.0 Extensive (P) Cream to off-white pages.
This issue is the twelfth most valuable comic book of all according to Overstreet -- in the 2004 Overstreet ranking it even surpassed
Detective
#1 -- it's now the second most-valuable issue of the title, behind only and now ranks behind only the hallowed #27. A look at the cover is enough to tell you how early in Batman's career this is: he's still "
the
Batman" and he's even wearing a gun holster. But the real highlight is the first-ever telling of Batman's origin. The cover and art are by the Caped Crusader's creator Bob Kane. Other artists in the issue include Sheldon Moldoff and Fred Guardineer. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cover cleaned, reinforced. (7th page married)." Overstreet 2004 GD 2.0 value = $3,750; VG 4.0 value = $7,500; FN 6.0 value = $11,250.
