Mad #5 (EC, 1953) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages. Bill Elder takes his turn at cover art (but wouldn't get another shot for over 250 issues) and comes up with a brilliant collage of none-too-subtle vignettes. Elder did manage to contribute lots of interior work in the series, often working with Wood or Kurtzman, and showed up for decades afterwards in the Kurtzman creation of "Little Annie Fanny" in Playboy. This high-grade copy brings Elder's genius to life. Overstreet advises this issue suffered low distribution. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $1,036. From the collection of Bobby Harmon. $$$$$

If you've been dazed and confused, even appalled and perturbed by the rising value of this milestone comic book, yet are stubbornly determined to procure a good-looking copy, at least from the front, looky here, for your improbable standards have been realized. This is a classic tale of two sides, front and back. The front looks to be high grade, while 40%-50% of the back cover suffers from a large dust shadow. World's Finest Comics #71 (DC, 1954) CGC FN+ 6.5 Light tan to off-white pages. When DC decided to actually make the covers serious on their superhero books, they came up with some classics. These mid-1950s issues are extremely tough to find, and they are way cooler than most of the earlier ones (and the later ones, too, for that matter). This key book marks the beginning of Superman and Batman acting as a team. Overstreet calls this one scarce, and no copies of this issue have been graded higher than 7.5 by CGC as of this writing, so it's easy to imagine there just may not be any true high-grade copies at all. Weird Tales of the Future #4 (Aragon, 1952) CGC FN+ 6.5 Cream to off-white pages. The quirky art of Basil Wolverton was featured in six of the eight issues of this title, creating a greater demand than for the typical comic book of the same genre. Wolverton contributes to the cover in addition to doing several pages of interior art for this issue. Dust shadows, relatively imperceptible on the front cover, and just a few signs of stress around the edges keep this in the upper-mid-grade range. Overstreet 2002 FN 6.0 value = $327.
