Hardly in need of an introduction, Super Mario Bros. 3 is the third bestselling NES game, with over 17 million copies sold worldwide. This was the first Mario game to feature an over world map, and an inventory system for power ups that would continue to be used in future releases in the immensely popular franchise.

The game was heavily marketed in Nintendo Power magazine, through NBC's The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon series, and appeared in the 1989 movie, The Wizard. All of the events that take place in The Wizard lead up to a competition in which 3 players must compete to get the best score on a game no one has ever seen before. It was revealed in the movie that game was Super Mario Bros. 3.

The game was not released in North America until 1990, nearly a year and a half after its release in Japan. With so many nuances to the release, the first versions of this game that hit the store shelves in 1990 showed a variation in the box art that is referred to as the "Left Bros." variant. This describes the justification of the "Bros." in the title on the box art. Shortly after the game's 1990 release, the "Bros." was moved to the right side, just above Mario's hat, to improve the aesthetics of the overall design. For one of the most highly printed games on the NES, "Left Bros." variants are uncommon and signify the first printing of the game. The majority of copies that were produced are the revised "Right Bros." variant as seen here.
