Space Invaders - Wata 9.2 A+ Sealed [1978 Blue Box, First Production], 2600 Atari 1978 USA. Make no mistake, this blue box version of the popular arcade port is in an entirely different league than its red box counterpart! The box color is a standout indicator for a US copy which production run it's from, and copies from earliest production runs of this title are blue. Back in April, we sold a 9.2 A+ copy for more than $8,000, and we expect this lot to eclipse that mark as more and more collectors learn just how important this release of this iconic game is. Cover art by Gary Norman. (The Wata labelling lists the 2600 port as 1978, but it actually came out in 1980. It was such a hit that it quadrupled sales of the Atari VCS console, kicking home gaming into the mainstream. In fact, the 2600 port of Space Invaders is widely regarded as the first "killer app" for a console.)
