Rare Early-Production Variant of Iconic Platformer, PSA Certified
Sonic the Hedgehog - PSA 9.8 A+ Sealed [Printed in Japan, South
San Francisco Address, Early Production], Genesis Sega 1991
USA. According to PSA's September 2025 population report, only
seven copies of this early-production San Francisco address variant
of Sonic the Hedgehog are documented, with this example
ranking as the second-highest graded by the company and the top
copy we've ever offered. Later-production copies feature a Redwood
City address on the box, and PSA notes 17 examples of that
version-more than twice as many as the San Francisco variant. To
put that in perspective, seven copies is an exceptionally small
number compared to the populations of key releases across most
other collectible categories, making this variant extraordinarily
elusive for top-tier collectors. It's also worth noting that this
copy is among the first games ever certified under the new PSA
banner, adding another layer of distinction to its appeal.Originally included as a pack-in title with the Genesis, Sonic the Hedgehog played a pivotal role in transforming Sega into a true rival to Nintendo during the height of the 16-bit console wars. It introduced players to Sonic, the lightning-fast blue mascot who would soon become one of gaming's most enduring icons. Boasting blistering platforming action, vibrant visuals, and a memorable soundtrack by Masato Nakamura of the pop band Dreams Come True, the game became an instant classic.
