Hail to the King of Survival Horror, Baby!

Resident Evil - Wata 9.6 A+ Sealed [Ridged Longbox, First Production] (The Dreamer Collection), PS1 Capcom 1996 USA. While the name of the pedigree for this game, "The Dreamer Collection," refers to the original owner's lofty dream of building an incredible rental store with an immense library of amazing games, it does seem to represent more for this particular piece within the collection. At the time of writing, there are less than ten known copies purported to exist in sealed condition for this variant. However, PlayStation collectors have often described Resident Evil in sealed condition as "elusive," "impossible," or simply, "the one that got away," variant aside.

Most probably recognize the jewel CD case as the packaging medium for the original PlayStation. However, the "long box" style is the real OG. All of the earliest PlayStation games produced were packaged in this format. Though the jewel CD cases were likely much better for Sony's production cost and timeline, we can't stress enough just how much of a head-turning, commanding presence games in this box style have. Something about the aesthetics is just so satisfying; it's borderline hypnotic.

We could probably write sonnets about the box, but we have to move on to the game itself -- absolutely revolutionary, and that's a fact. Sure, there were other games that paved the road that ultimately brought us to Resident Evil that one could retroactively categorize as part of the survival horror genre. Still, Capcom officially coined the term with the marketing for Resident Evil.

Since the series' humble beginning on the PS1, there have been eight major installments in the series, a long list of spin-offs, a movie series, and most recently, an animated TV-series. Despite the first game's oft-criticized voice over quality and questionable dialogue choices ("You were almost a Jill Sandwich!"), Resident Evil ultimately redefined what a video game experience could be. The stakes felt high, the fear was palpable, and somehow the pressure and terror just made it one hell of a good time.
