Nintendo World Championships 1990 Grey - Wata 8.0 Cart [#0273], NES Nintendo 1990 USA. This is the first NWC that we've ever offered with a grade higher than a Wata 5.5, and a grade like this on an item that was created without the intention of consumer release is a difficult thing to achieve. Even the glue that was used to adhere the label to the cartridge is inferior to that of mass-produced cartridges. It's been estimated that roughly one hundred of these NWC cartridges that were used from the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition still remain in existence, and the vast majority have not been kept in the same superior level of preservation as this example.

It wasn't too long ago that this exact cartridge, Cartridge #0273, made waves in the collecting community when it was traded for a PSA Gem Mint 10 Tom Brady 2000 Contenders Rookie Autograph #144. Since that trade occurred, the sports card and video game markets have been heating up contemporaneously at an exponential rate. In fact, earlier this year, the very same Tom Brady Rookie card that was traded for this NWC sold for an incredible reported price of $555,988. That aside, we're not here to compare apples (video games) to oranges (sports cards), but it can be assumed that the collectors who made the trade held these two items to be of comparable, if not equal, value.

With that having been said, the nature of this cartridge is an entirely different animal in the sense that it was not made with a consumer in mind. Rather, it was meant to be used for one competition in 1990, and, once its purpose at the competition was fulfilled, it's widely accepted that these cartridges were meant to be discarded or recycled. The Nintendo World Championships in 1990 may not have been the first video game competition ever held, but it was the largest among the earliest ever organized and that makes this cartridge an invaluable artifact of esports history.
