Metroid's Classic Series edition box is signified by its yellow cover and illustrative artwork of Samus Aran, and includes a manual and cartridge that match. This artwork also bears strong resemblance to the rendering of Samus featured on the cover of Metroid II: The Return of Samus.

Originally released in 1986, Metroid is considered the first game to feature a female protagonist. However, her identity is only revealed to players who are able to beat the game in under 5 hours. The game was reprinted in 1992 as part of the NES Classic Series, the early predecessor to the Player's Choice label, which is signified by the red banner on the box.
