While this is the third game to be released in the Castlevania series, its a prequel to the original Castlevania for the NES, and marks the first appearance of Trevor C. Belmont, ancestor of Simon Belmont. Games imported from Japan typically use the same box art as the Japanese releases, but this game is an exception to the rule. The cover art and packaging illustrations were created by the legendary artist Tom Dubois.
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse is known for its non-linear gameplay and the multiple, possible endings a player can experience based on what they chose to do throughout the game. An advertised promotion on the box art of this copy reads, "Win a Trip to Dracula's Hometown! Details Inside." There have been speculations that the trip as cancelled due to unrest in Eastern Europe at the time. Second revisions of the game removed the round advertisement from the front of the box. Those later revisions are particularly hard to come by.
