This is the 5th game in the popular Mega Man series, and it marks the first appearance of Mega Man's support companion, Beat.

Capcom held a contest in collaboration with Nintendo Power magazine to request submissions for new villain characters. The eight Robot Master bosses in Mega Man 5 were created by the artist Keiji Inafune, who worked on all the previous Mega Man games, and he based them on the designs that were sent in to Capcom. Reportedly, Capcom received over 130,000 character submissions for the game.

Though Inafune had to illustrate several drafts for the Robot Masters before they were approved, his first draft for Beat was approved immediately. Beat has appeared in subsequent installments in the series.
