Duck Hunt - Wata 7.0 C Sealed [Hangtab, 3 Code, Mid-Production], NES Nintendo 1985 USA. It's always wonderful to see a familiar face (or duck, in this case)! We initially offered this copy in our 2020 September Signature Auction, and since then we have not offered a single sealed copy in any variant. This definitely does not stem from a lack of desire to offer it. After all, who doesn't love Duck Hunt? We have not received any interest from collectors willing to part with their copy, nor have we discovered any previously unknown sealed copies. Duck Hunt is arguably one of the most iconic and popular games that was produced for the NES; it was one of the best-selling titles on the console -- second only to Super Mario Bros. Considering the trajectory that the market has been on, we fully expect that this lot will surpass the mark it set when sold for $6,600 all-in last September.

On the subject of hangtabs, many have asked us why cardboard specifically, are such a big deal. To those who are new to the world of vintage video games, cardboard hangtabs served a functional purpose when stickers were used to seal games instead of plastic wrap. Nintendo's packaging improved in the US as the company's popularity grew, and plastic wrap eventually became the standard for sealing games. Inexplicably, this improvement was made before the box cutting die removed the cardboard hangtab. There are four sub-variants of the plastic sealed cardboard hangtab box (this particular copy is the "3 Code" variant). Each sub-variant of the cardboard hangtab black box was produced within the span of a year, and each had a production period of just a few months; a drop in the bucket compared to the title's overall production run. In short, a cardboard hangtab copy of any early Nintendo Entertainment System game brings a certain air of "vintage" unrivaled by its successors.
