Zap Comix #1 First Printing - Plymell Edition (Apex Novelties, 1968) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages. The story of Robert Crumb and Zap Comix #1 remains a fascinating glimpse into the wild world of San Francisco, circa 1967. Crumb was one of the many young Americans who walked away from a dull life for the lure of the Bay Area's thriving counterculture scene. After leaving drab Cleveland behind, the newly liberated artist let his imagination and his Rapidograph mechanical pen run wild, creating material for a comic book that was printed by Don Donahue on an old pre-war press owned by Beat poet Charley Plymell. Those original copies of Zap #1 were then peddled on the street corners of the Haight-Ashbury area, the epicenter of the Hippie movement, during the early months of 1968 (the November, 1967 date inside the comic was when Crumb actually completed the art, not when it was printed). That any of the 5,000 or so first-printing copies survived intact is a wonder in itself; that any are still in this kind of like-new condition is simply amazing. Fogel's Underground Comix Price Guide NM- 9.2 value = $10,000. CGC census 10/14: 11 in 9.4, 6 higher.
