Zap Comix #1 (First Printing - Plymell) (Apex Novelties, 1968) CGC NM+ 9.6 Cream to off-white pages. It's an oft-told tale, but one that bears repeating. In late 1967, artist Robert Crumb completed artwork for what would be one of the most important comic books of the 1960s, one that signaled the beginning of the Independent Comics movement, as well as being a focal point for the entire San Francisco hippy subculture. Having been burnt by one out-of-town publisher who disappeared with his artwork, Crumb contacted a local friend, Don Donahue, who found someone with an old printing press (Charlie Plymell, the Beat poet). Zap #1 was printed in February, 1968, in Plymell's apartment, as nude parties were going on in the next room. Donahue was new to running a press (and maybe a little distracted), so a good portion of the 5,000 print run was ruined and trashed; what was left -- maybe 3,000 copies, maybe less, were hand-collated, stapled, and hustled on the streets of the Haight/Ashbury area for 25¢ apiece. That any copy could survive in such immaculate condition is amazing, but here's one of the prettiest, sharpest examples we've ever seen. Adult content. Robert Crumb stories, cover, and art. Fogel's Underground Comix Price Guide Supplement NM- value = $10,000. CGC census 5/12: 4 in 9.6, none higher.
