Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages. The best copy we've ever offered of one of the very toughest Marvel keys to find in high grade!Note the census numbers below and compare with other 1963 Marvel #1s: Amazing Spider-Man #1 and Avengers #1 each have 10 copies graded 9.4 or higher, while X-Men #1 has 16 in those grades. Sgt. Fury has a mere five. Compare this to other copies of the issue and you'll really appreciate the unsmudged blue-grey background as well as the absence of any sort of stain or marking.
The issue is the first appearance of the Nick Fury character, pre-dating the publication of his "Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." adventures by more than two years. With Fury slated to play a role in next year's Avengers movie, we could see demand for this character going up next year, and if you saw "Captain America" this year you saw that Dum Dum Dugan and Gabe Jones have made it to the big screen as well and therefore might do so again (this is the first appearance of those two).
The cover art is by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers. This may well be the most remarkable Silver Age comic in our auction, and we suggest giving it a close look, as this book's days of being under the radar are coming to an end. Overstreet 2011 NM- 9.2 value = $6,000. CGC census 11/11: 5 in 9.4, none higher.
