Description
The Incredible Hulk #1 (Marvel, 1962) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages. After two decades' worth of comic book auctions, we have yet to offer a copy with a higher grade than this, a near-impossible task considering that CGC has certified a sole NM 9.4 copy to date!The original 1962 series ran for a scant six issues before it was cancelled, and the Mean Green Smashing Machine was transferred to Tales to Astonish before eventually regaining his own title. Copies of his original series were subject to the "Marvel chipping" endemic to the company's early-'60s output, and this issue's midnight blue cover was especially prone to scuffs and color breaks.
This copy has managed to avoid such defects, and presents exceptionally well with rich cover colors and only faint wear to the edges and corners. It also managed to dodge the inconsistent trimming that plagued most copies of this issue at the printing level, resulting in much of the Big Guy's big toe being cut out of the image. That is not the case here!
In addition to the iconic debut of the Hulk, this classic also features the first appearances of Rick Jones, Betty Ross, and General "Thunderbolt" Ross, presented by the legendary team of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. It is currently ranked #2 on Overstreet's list of Top 50 Silver Age Comics. Overstreet 2024 NM- 9.2 value = $430,000. CGC census 1/26: 8 in 9.2, 1 higher.
