    Description

Showcase #6 Challengers of the Unknown (DC, 1957) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages. This title began as an anthology concept (Firefighters, Kings of the Wild, Frogmen, and Manhunters were all early issue themes), but with the historic issue #4 introducing the Silver Age Flash (and basically the Silver Age itself), the potential of Showcase as a tryout medium for new titles was boldly illustrated. Beginning with this issue, an impressive string of 31 issues featured characters that would ultimately get their own titles, fueling the early years of the Silver Age. This issue featured Jack Kirby returning to prominence, with the origin and first appearance of the Challengers of the Unknown, the first Silver Age hero team. This was the first original concept for a Silver Age series. Kirby and Stan Lee's Fantastic Four was still nearly five years away! Not one single copy has earned a grade higher than this offering. Overstreet 2013 VF/NM 9.0 value = $5,520; NM- 9.2 value = $8,600. CGC census 5/14: 3 in 9.0, none higher.
