Fantastic Four #1 (Marvel, 1961) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages. Behold, a top-tier copy of the comic book that launched the Marvel Age, and one of the finest we've encountered in more than two decades. To date, CGC has certified a dozen copies of this historic comic in VF/NM 9.0 condition, and eight others with a higher grade; we've offered only four 9.0 copies, and three unrestored copies with a higher grade.
The importance of this issue cannot be overstated. Its publication was the opening salvo of a barrage of comics -- and major first appearances -- that allowed them to gain the upper hand on rival DC after more than 20 years, forever altering the course of the industry.
It features the origin and first appearance of the Fantastic Four, Marvel's first superhero team, whose upcoming return to the big screen in July 2025 is one of the summer's most anticipated movies. Also featured is the origin and first appearance of Mole Man. The story is by Stan Lee, and proved to be a pivotal moment in his career; the same goes for Jack Kirby, whose cover and story art launched an epic 101-issue run as the artist for the title. It is currently #3 on Overstreet's list of Top 50 Silver Age Comics. Overstreet 2024 VF/NM 9.0 value = $214,000; NM- 9.2 value = $350,000. CGC census 5/25: 12 in 9.0, 8 higher.
