    Description

Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #1 Circle 8 pedigree (Marvel, 1963) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages. A much tougher book in this grade than most seem to think! Only twelve copies have been graded higher than 8.5 as of this writing, even the famously tough Hulk #1 (14 copies) cannot say that! In fact, the only major Marvel Silver Age keys with a more sparsely populated census report are Fantastic Four #1 and Tales to Astonish #27, the first and second Marvel superhero comics, both a year and a half older. Compared to other 1963 #1s like Amazing Spider-Man #1 (36 copies), X-Men #1 (50 copies), and Avengers #1 (33 copies), this one is much harder to find in top grades.
The issue is the first appearance of the Nick Fury character, pre-dating the publication of his "Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." adventures by more than two years. The cover art is by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers. Overstreet 2012 VF 8.0 value = $2,250; VF/NM 9.0 value = $4,875. CGC census 2/13: 18 in 8.5, 12 higher.
