Description

Zap Comix #1 Variant Cover First Printing Edition Signed by Robert Crumb (Apex Novelties, 1967) Condition: NM-. Here's something even our most experienced Underground Comix experts have never seen! This is a copy of Zap Comix #1 from the original "Charles Plymell" first print run that was printed without the third color (orange) on the front cover. It may have been pulled and assembled as a test for the blue ink, which R. Crumb was notoriously fussy about. The story goes that Don Donahue, who ran Charley Plymell's pre-WWII offset press, had to go through several different shades of blue before Crumb was satisfied. It certainly makes for an unusual copy! Robert Crumb signed the front cover, and inscribed, "Signed in Cologne, 2004" in the lower right corner. Robert Crumb stories, cover, and art. Fogel's 2015 Underground Price & Grading Guide NM- value (for regular three-color version) = $10,000. From the Eric Sack Collection.
