    Description

Zap Comix #1 Plymell Edition 1st Printing (Apex Novelties, 1968) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages. Ah, the classic King of Undergrounds, the legendary Charles Plymell first printing of Zap Comix #1. What a history this humble little 25¢ comic book carries! Some quick facts behind this comic: it was printed in February 1968 (the 1967 date inside was when artist Robert Crumb finished the book) in Charley's Post Street apartment in San Francisco; there were naked parties being thrown in the next room as Don Donahue learned how to run Charley's pre-war Multilith press, printing on whatever paper stock they could find; Don and Robert Crumb's wife Dana really did push a baby carriage through the streets of Haight-Ashbury, selling the comic. If you are a serious collector of Undergrounds, you gotta have this one! Adult themes. Fogel's 2015 Underground Comix Price Guide NM- 9.2 value = $10,000. CGC census 10/15: 11 in 9.4, 7 higher. From the Howard Greber Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
