Description

Zap Comix #1 First Printing - Plymell Edition (Apex Novelties, 1967) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages. Here's a stellar copy of the comic which virtually launched the Underground Comix movement. The story has oft been told but bears repeating: Robert Crumb, tired of working "for the man" in Cleveland, escapes to San Francisco in January, 1967. As a child, Crumb and his siblings had created their own comic books for years, a habit Robert still carried with him. After exposure to the hippy lifestyle in California, this habit led him to draw Zap as the first in a series of "head shop" comic books. This is the first edition, as printed by Don Donahue and Charlie Plymell on Plymell's rickety old pre-war press, and sold in the Height-Ashbury district by Crumb's wife, Dana, out of a baby buggy. Fogel's Underground Comix Price Guide Supplement NM- 9.2 value = $10,000. CGC census 9/11: 5 in 9.4, 3 higher.
