Zap Comix #1 First Printing - Plymell Edition (Apex Novelties, 1967) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages. Here's a little background on this historic comic book. After leaving a good paying but hectic job with a greeting card company in Cleveland, Robert Crumb found himself in San Francisco with time on his hands. His dream of being a published cartoonist was starting to come together, thanks to the free-thinking alternative press newspapers like the East Village Other, who gladly accepted Robert's off-the-wall strips. With a style that resembled the art of the 1930s and 40s, but infused with the new sex 'n drugs counter-culture, Crumb's comics were the hottest thing in town. Soon, a Beat Generation poet with a printing press, Charlie Plymell, offered to go into partnership with an aspiring publisher, Don Donahue, and they looked Crumb up with an offer to print an entire comic book of his work -- which Crumb happened to already have, ready to print. The rest, as they say, is history, and here's a prime example of that first true Underground comic. Fogel's Underground Comix Price Guide Supplement NM- 9.2 value = $10,000. CGC census 10/13: 4 in 9.2, 14 higher.
