Humbug 1-11 Group (Humbug, 1957-58). The influence of Harvey Kurtzman on the world of comics, and satiric humor in general, is enormous. As the original guiding light for Mad, Kurtzman's askew look at popular culture turned the comic-book reading world on its collective ear back in 1952. After leaving that title due to creative differences with publisher William Gaines, Kurtzman struck out on his own with Humbug, an odd cross between the early comic book issues of Mad, and the later, more sophisticated satire of Mad's magazine version. It was, unfortunately, a short-lived title. Nine issues were published in the 6.5" x 9.5" comic-book format, with two last issues moving to a 8.5" x 10.5" magazine size before the plug was finally pulled late in 1958. However brief the Humbug run may have been, it did not go unnoticed by the likes of a young Robert Crumb, and other future stars of the comics medium. Here's all eleven issues, including the hard-to-find last two (and the last issue is even signed by Kurtzman!) Condition is as follows: #1 FN, #2 FN+, #3 FN-, #4 VG, #5 FN, #6 VG/FN, #7 FN/VF, #8 VG/FN, #9 VG, #10 FN+, #11 FN/VF. The list of artists and writers is an impressive one -- Will Elder, Jack Davis, Al Jaffee, Russ Heath, and of course, the genius of Harvey Kurtzman himself. Don't let this rare opportunity to obtain a complete set of this historic publication pass you by! Approximate Overstreet value for group = $490.
