    Description

Weird Tales - March 1923 First Issue, Second-State Copy (Rural Publishing, 1923) Condition: Apparent VG. This is only the second copy of the debut issue of the longest-running and most influential pulp horror title we've ever had a chance to offer, and the first color-corrected cover variant as well. Nearly all copies of this issue have the black and orange tones reversed inside the front cover illustration box; however, the colors were apparently corrected for a small part of the print run. This copy is one of those "second state" copies, identified by the black border around the box, the man's white shirt, and the woman's orange bow. A very rare variant of a rare pulp (only two other copies are known to exist); obtaining a copy in any condition is a remarkable achievement for most collectors.
This specimen has aged well over the past 90 (!) years; its covers and spine are complete and unfaded, with just a modest amount of tanning and soiling, and the cream to light tan pages are surprisingly supple and display none of the flaking one would expect. Restoration includes: tear seal to front cover, front cover reattached. A true rarity in very nice condition. Bookery's Guide to Pulps VG value = $8,750.
