Description

Weird Tales - March 1923 First Issue, Second-State Copy (Popular Fiction) Condition: VG+. A stunning specimen of the debut issue of the longest-running and most influential pulp horror title, and a rare "second state" first color-corrected cover variant as well. Nearly all copies of this issue have the black and orange tones reversed inside the front cover illustration box; however, the colors were apparently corrected for a small part of the print run. This is one of those "second state" copies, identified by the black border around the box, the man's white shirt, and the woman's orange bow.
A very rare variant of a rare pulp, obtaining a copy in any condition is a remarkable achievement for most collectors. This is one of only a handful of copies of issue #1 we've seen in the past decade, and only the third copy of the corrected version that Heritage has had the opportunity to offer.
As if that weren't enough, it is also one of the nicest copies of the first issue we've ever seen. Its covers and spine are complete and unfaded, with just a minor amount of tanning, soiling, and creasing; the tan to light tan pages are surprisingly supple and exhibit only a small amount of the flaking one would expect. There are small pieces of clear tape on the first page near the staples. A true rarity in great condition. Bookery's Guide to Pulps VG value = $12,000.
