Weird Tales #1 First State Copy (Popular Fiction, 1923) Condition: Apparent VG+. The first issue of the longest-running and most influential of all pulp horror titles. This is a "first state" copy, identified by the orange border around "Ooze," the man's orange shirt, and the woman's black bow (the colors are different on the rarer "second state" printing). This is an extensively restored copy that presents very well and as one of the rarest pulps, obtaining a copy in any condition is a remarkable achievement for most collectors.
Restoration includes pieces added and some fairly extensive paint fill-in to the spine and areas of the front and back covers, as well as tear seals. There are some tears to the interior pages, which remain a nice off-white and are supple with no signs of brittleness. In terms of presentation, this copy is the nicest of the mere four that we've offered to date, and only the second First State copy we've seen (the other a FR). Bookery's Guide to Pulps Unrestored GD value = $3,000; VG value = $7,000; FN value = $15,000.
